A car with three occupants descends toward a sun scalded valley from a coast range pass at 1408 feet. An elder lady searches for a long forgotten landmark while recalling the buck board era and dusty miles to the summit.
At Coos County Fair calf scrambles drew huge crowds with 12 youngsters averaging 90 pounds aiming to capture calves weighing 300 to 500 pounds. Wayne Watson battled a much larger calf for 15 minutes before securing a halter as the crowd urged a prize, and friends helped pull the win from the arena. The event showcased grit and tenacity amid a spirited fair atmosphere.
The 41st annual Coos County Fair drew record crowds including Max Barbour’s rodeo shows on Saturday and Sunday. Cowboys Jasbo Gibbs Wayne Watson Rick McCall and Steve Buttin competed with Brahma bulls as the crowd roared at the grandstand. Buttin suffered three broken ribs and other injuries after a Brahma toss at Mast hospital. Shorty Horn won bareback and saddle bronc championships while Herb Helden claimed the bull riding title on Sunday.
The Myrtle Point Rotary Club will host District Governor Mr. Smith next Thursday at noon. Smith chairs Pendleton Rotary and is one of 207 district governors overseeing about 7,600 clubs with 360,000 members worldwide. Rotary clubs share goals of fellowship, professional standards, and world goodwill. During the past fiscal year 219 new clubs formed in 32 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.
District 41 C teachers meet at the new school on Thursday August 27 at 9 00 am to prepare for the September 2 opening A half day for September 2 students will report and the rest of the day will be for supplies Buses run as last year with minor changes in the Norway area The district has bought its own buses for the Catching Creek and MacKinley routes McKinley and y routes will be combined Mr Franzen will notify affected residents.
Fern Trull told Myrtle Point and Coquille BPW clubs about English women facing social hurdles on a visit to New York. Delegates, including Miss Trull, discussed U N observer roles and a defense by a Uruguay delegate as tensions with the US were noted. Thirty five attended the dinner at the Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club with gifts exchanged for Miss Trull and her party.
Word from Portland Oregon says Elton Schroeder proprietor of Henry A Schroeder and Sons Furniture Myrtle Point has been elected a director of the State Furniture Dealers association for a three year term.
The Myrtle Point Saddle Club hosted the annual Cowboy Breakfast at City Park with 1206 to 1290 attendees. Mrs Ernest Lebart said the event served eggs, hot cakes, ham, potatoes, and coffee from 7 to 11 with extensions to noon due to long lines.
Registration for Union High School freshmen is set for August 26 1 PM and August 27 1 PM to 4 PM and 7 PM to 8 PM. The district announces a new daily schedule with classes starting at 9 45 AM and closing at 3 56 PM but details appear unclear.
At the Coos County Fair auction Friday night the 11 calves sold for an average price to J C Penny Co of Coquille after the Grange talent show. Winners include Carl’s calf for best in judging and other firsts in the scramble with participants from Myrtle Point Broadbent Remote Bullards and others.
Complete exhibit prize winners list submitted by George Jenkins shows open class dairy cattle results with grand and junior champions from Bridge Ridge Jersey Farm Sumner and other exhibitors in Coos County. The tally includes Jersey cattle, cows, calves, and get of sire with entries from North Bend Coquille Myrtle Point and Coos Bay as judged by County Agent George Jentina and staff.
A large Friday night audience filled the fair grounds for the Grange Talent Show at the Cocos County Fair. North Side Grange placed first with Petersen and his group delivering a standout performance. Fair board member John Nether notes the program’s strong showing.
A large crowd gathered in Myrtle Point Saturday for the Coos County Fair parade. Led by Sam Dement, the event featured Magdalene Vance’s dancing class, a kiddies’ parade, pets, bikes, and a 4 H group float guided by a supervisor. The Coquille Valley Country Club float with cowboys followed, continuing on page seven.
