Emergency dim-out order takes effect at midnight across all coastal zones. Visible lights from sea must be doused or obscured. wired lights and outward beams must be shielded. street and interior lights may remain on within posted inland areas.
The city council authorized the city attorney to contact the State Highway Commission about street oiling. The street committee may buy oil for surfacing certain streets this fall. The building committee to determine costs for a contract to be let soon.
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the awning in front of H A Schroeder and Sons Furniture on Spruce Street, waking local firefighters at 4:00 a.m. G E B Freeman of Eads Service Station spotted the blaze, raised the alarm, and moved the burning awning aside. The fire damaged only the awning frame and the front door area as the cloth extinguished.
The moving picture My Gal Sal in techni color plays at the Hiland Theatre Sunday and Monday evenings. Theatre manager Austin Dodge calls it the entertainment hit of the season and praises Rita Hayworth Victor Mature John Sutton and Caroledis for delivering top entertainment.
Last Friday evening at the Coquille Valley Country Club the Indies group hosted a dinner for men who worked on the golf course that day. The event included social time at the clubhouse and continued games after supper. August 24, Mrs. John Arnold chaired the women’s group.

Bowers Barber shop Roberts real estate and law offices plan moves in about two months after Barker work is done. Mrs. Julia Parrish reports a letter from her son Roy Parrish stationed with a coast artillery regiment in Hawaii describing good health and enjoying the climate. Roy, a 1987 Union High School graduate, has served several months. A son was born at the Mast hospital Saturday to Mr. and Mrs. R. B. House of Brooks, named Robert Stanley, weight 9 pounds 9 ounces.
General Arnold touts superior American aircraft in the Pacific as Army and Allied forces strike Japanese bases and harbors. in the Solomons area U S fleets report cruiser losses and multiple enemy ships sunk or damaged while air offensives continue from India and China and allied bomber raids.
Eldon Brodie was guest of honor at the Lions Club luncheon at Jack and Jill Cafe. The event celebrated the birth of his first son, Benjamin Edmund, born at Belle Knife hospital in Coquille. Guests showered him with gifts as speakers Pat Richard and Lee Yowell, local high school coach, addressed the group.

Calvin Reed stationed with the Marines in San Diego has been visiting his parents for the past week and left Tuesday to rejoin.
