State civilian defense council issues dim-out questions and answers for Oregon counties detailing permitted light use at night. Includes shade rules for windows blinds and fixtures, motorist headlamps, and enforcement penalties, plus traveler notes and a local arrival story from Portland to Los Angeles.
At a Monday meeting of the Coquille Valley Country Club about 25 new members were added as the club planned further events. Officers set a new membership goal and outlined Friday night activities including a dinner where men golf members must bring a shovel to symbolize work on the fairways. Mrs. John Arnold leads the ladies group inviting golf enthusiasts to join. A relaxed two ball foursome tournament is planned for 10:00 am with members, guests and visitors.
The event partners Ametité and Oregon State Jersey club plan a Jersey cattle presentation with Governor Sprague and Secretary Snell as speakers. Leo G. Spitsbart coordinates with T. J. Law Jr. and the Grants Pass donors to award bulls at the fairgrounds to breeders aiming to improve herds and production.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 1 00 pm at the Schroeder chapel Myrtle Point for John Calvin Jackson 81 who died last Thursday night on his farm. Rev H Z Mitchelmore officiated and interment was in Fox Bridge cemetery. Jackson came to Gravel Ford about age eight and lived on the same farm for more than 72 years.
The second Canteen group served 96 people at a dinner held at the Methodist church between 6 and 7. Mrs. Cora Schroeder led food preparation. Mrs. Ross Garrett was serving captain and Mrs. Olive Burgess the permanent captain. Members who finished the course include Mrs. Rose Garrett and Mrs. Howard Whitaker is director.

Reedsport visitors Xananth Button and Kenneth Jr with Myrtle Fite. Townssend club members to Marshall Field for a gathering.
A meeting for all growers is set in the Smith Hughes room at Myrtle Point High School next Friday evening August 14 at 8 00 p m. George Jenkins says the group will discuss lamb marketing and market readiness.
Mrs J H Smith hosted a birthday dinner Sunday for her husband and his twin Harold Smith of Yachats. Several local residents, including Miss Margaret Davis of Coquille and Miss Bonnie Baines, were noted in the day’s social mentions with visitors arriving from Tillamook and Grants Pass to enjoy beaches and gatherings.
The local playground program run by Mrs. Fred Lefferty at the city park closed with a picnic and races for children. It began on June 6 and ended in August with total enrollment of 127 and daily attendance of 92. Martell Roper and Richard Roush won top bicycle race spots in the first junior group, while Donald Laird and Marvine Christensen led the other events.
Eugene hosts a gathering of air spotters and filter center workers with 5,000 or more ground observers expected. Brigadier General W. E. Kepner of the IV Fighter Command will lead the event, starting with registration at 10:09 a.m. and an open air War Service at 11:00 a.m. in City Park.
Funeral services were held at the Schroeder chapel in Myrtle Point for Mrs. Sarah Catherine Barklow 71 a pioneer resident of southwestern Oregon who died at her daughter's home on Hall's Creek. Interment followed at Nash Cemetery Camas Valley. She was born May 9 1871 in Meadow Lake vicinity and lived in Coos and Curry counties. Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Clarence Lea Butler and a son Lawrence Barklow.
Ninety nine mattresses and 92 quilts were made by workers at the Mattress center at the fair grounds in Myrtle Point. Mrs George Hofman, who had charge of the center, reported the totals.
Miss Fay Na hya Dr. and MeO H Clarke plan a visit with Robert Clarke in Oregon City arriving Friday. Mrs Jones will travel by bus to Portland to visit relatives and then north to North Bonneville. Technical Sergeant Frank Ferrman receives a promotion to technical sergeant. Cadet Earl Osborne transfers to Tucson and is named adjutant captain. Local residents from Bridge and North Bend visit here and Warren Knight and wife spend time with the Knight family.
