School year begins August 30 for Myrtle Point with grade reassignments due to enrollment. Registration for new movers and unregistered first graders occurs August 23–25 at district office. seventh to ninth grade registrations split among Myrtle Crest School and the high school.
Mrs Albert Olson of Myrtle Point won the second annual Pie Baking Contest at the Coos County Fair beating five other finalists among nine pies entered. She earns a Frigidaire range as grand prize with judges including Grace Phipps of KCBY TV.
John Carl and his wife from Arago were honored as the oldest married couple attending the O0th Coos Cowmy Fair. Carl, an original fair stockholder, notes they have never missed the Coos County Fair over the years. Senior Citizens Day offered free admission to all 65 and older.
Georgia-Pacific Corp. has shut down two Wigwam waste burners at Coquille and Norway Ore as part of its air pollution controls. The Coquille unit built in 1936 stopped after burning about 8.25 million cubic feet of bark and wood waste, while the 1963 Norway unit consumed roughly 27 million cubic feet over 18 years. Additional burners were closed at Pilot Rock Powers Oregon Post Falls Edna Eure Samoa and one in North Carolina with Pilot Rock reactivated briefly due to a rail strike.
Fair ended its five day run with attendance just shy of the 48,600 all time mark. Saturday drew a record 16,300 aided by country singer Susan Raye, with rodeo also at peak. Ticket income about 80 000 and exhibit quality praised despite fewer displays. No serious accidents and parking congestion noted. plans to expand parking next year.
Bellis Gene Porter of Elkside Lumber Co set a new championship pace with a 15.9 time to win the event. Jerry Smith of Ingram Bros. placed second with 20.0 seconds, and Mike Duan of Georgia Pacific was third at 20.8. Mike Cele of Weyerhaeuser Co led power saw bucking with a 42.41 time.
George Prescott Sr of Al Pierce Lumber Co won the log rolling with 46.54 seconds to claim the $100 first prize. Runner up Ken Forester of Kautson Tugboat Co and third place winner Goods Prescott of Al Pierce Lumber Co. Leu Cone won powder puff log bucking in 6:19, with Marilyn Blankenship and Ruth Hasel placing second and third. Traffic Safety head E W Tichnor presented Safe Driver Awards to Walter Smith, Harold Jensen, Larry Cox, John Coolen and Wilson Boyer, for late Earl Pickett. traveling trophy retired in memory of Earl Pichett by Haley Haley Coos Trucking.
