A tangled local column recalls Nit Wits, city officials, and odd incidents. Tales include Foose Clinton’s cleaned office, Will Rogers quips, a boy bicycle incident, a chlorine scare in water, and a four legged lawn mower. A maternity ambulance misadventure in Coquille and a Myrtle Point hunting tale close the item.
The Coquille Loggers defeated the Roseburg Prune Pickers 12 to 0 to claim the Southern Oregon league title. Klamath Falls finished second with Medford, Roseburg, Ashland and Eagle Point following. Manager Bill Fortier hails his squad as the strongest to represent Coquille in recent years and seeks a game with the state winners.
Coquille and Myrtle Point garden clubs joined for a joint gathering in Friendly Woods Tuesday evening. A potluck dinner under fir trees preceded a bonfire program featuring music by Tom Sumertin and R M Hesrleen, Swiss yodeling by Mr and Mrs Martin, talks by George Taylor and Rev E V Ostrander, and group singing chaired by Paul Breuer.
The summer school ended with a beach picnic at Bandon last Thursday, followed by graduation of eight arade diplomas to Dorothy Gurney Bery Williams Pauline Kollar Maxine Dement Aileen Osborne Kenneth Brackley Helen Lund Nelva Hazelton Helen Breuer Earl Osborne James Hoover Eda Smith Eileen Brack Zella Mae Moon Harriet McKay. Three students earned diplomas after deficiencies: J T Kelly Lloyd King Kenneth Rhule. Guests included Mrs L McKay Mrs A C Chase Miss Helen Devoo Miss Ann Smith and Mr Mrs Martin Evans with their families plus Mr and Mrs Floyd Summers and children.
Linfield College coach H H Lever traveled from McMinnville to Myrtle Point on a brief business visit Wednesday night, continuing duties related to the college.
Mrs Lanton Mrs Van Loan and several Beaver Creek children camped Thursday to Saturday on a gravel bar by the John Arnold ranch. Saturday morning they awoke to floodwaters after a logging company released water during the night, leaving beds partially submerged.
The library board met at City Hall to review July figures. Adult books read reached 730 while children's and state books read totaled 197 and 22. Money received included 0.70 from paid books and 170 from overdue books. Five new applications were filed and 20 books were mended. A $25 donation from the local chamber of commerce was noted.
A local resident at Catching Creek suffered a stroke and high blood pressure Monday leaving him critically ill. Mrs. Ernest Endicott and daughter Ellen arrived from Eugene to be at his bedside as the mother in law Mrs Margaret Endicott died, and Mr Ernest Endicott was called to Myrtle Point.
Miss Selma Latham daughter of R C Latham formerly of Myrtle Point now of McMinnville receives a Linfield College scholarship at McMinnville to help pay tuition based on her Myrtle Point Union High School scholastic record. She was in the 1933 graduating class and ranked among the five top students in her high school curriculum.
A. R. Davenport suffered a broken vein in the calf of his right leg after jumping from a truck last Saturday. He is currently hobbling on a crutch.
Mrs Catharine Mreng of Railroad suffers another stroke, details sparse as report notes medical condition and ongoing care.
The Coos County Fur Breeders association holds a twofold summer school at Coquille Community Hall on Sunday August 13 starting 10:00 a.m. Breeders from Curry and Coos counties will attend with speakers from Seattle Portland Salem and other towns plus a 1:00 p.m. musical program. A noon basket lunch awaits attendees and a small adult fee helps cover speaker transportation.
The city library has added nineteen recent titles placed on a special table. Noted authors include Willa Cather, F. Ferber, and S. Galsworthy with novels, biographies, and general literature plus thrillers. Additional titles appear in a latest order with works by Wilder, Tarkington, Yeats Brown, and Van Dine among others now available.
CCC entertains the CCC camp at Fairview with boxing music and special features attracting a large audience Wednesday night.
Helen Coweitt of the Oregon extension service led a canning lesson at Powers school with 56 club members and leaders Mrs George Lainger and Mrs Kruger. Attendees learned canning methods and each canned a jar. examples included cherries apricots carrots beets and beans. The session used a hot pack and a pressure cooker and ended with a potluck lunch.
D. M. Fox of Powers suffered a facial gash and concussion when a plank broke while rolling a barrel at the CBL oil house. He lay unconscious for about half an hour before seeking aid and was treated in Marshfield with five stitches.
The Mast Motor company, Myrtle Point's authorized Ford dealers, have moved from Eighth and Spruce to Seventh and Spruce. They will run sales and service at the new site and operate a filling and service station with staff on premises day and night.
Lloyd Summers of Portland lost sight in one eye after a ball struck his forearm and glancingly hit the eye. Doctors diagnosed retina injury paralyzing the optic nerve, ending his ability to work as a watchmaker.
Fritz Bollenbaugh returns to duties at the EB Hell Chaney logging camp on Baker Creek after a bone infection from a knee bruise. He had been sidelined for about a week due to the injury.
The Myrtle Point Fairgrounds will host a one day auto race speed carnival next Sunday August 13 drawing thousands of fans. The half mile track has been rebuilt resurfaced and drained to handle top drivers from across the Northwest and Pacific Coast with Art Scovell and Art Hines headlining a field including Grant Greenberg Bob Scovell Jim Thorpe and more. Preliminaries start at 1 pm with major events at 2 30 pm and affordable admission plus free parking available at the grounds.
Calif visitors James A Stauff of Santa Monica and William H Stauff of Grenada, brothers of County Treasurer Charles Stauff, spend time in the Arago district arranging a lease on their ranch long occupied by Ms Dan Miller.
Robin Reed will face Noel Franklin in the main bout at the North Bend community hall on Saturday night. The show includes a double main event with Swede Lawson and George Philpott, staged by the North Bend boxing commission and promoter selections. It kicks off a series of matches for the wrestling season.
Myrtle Camp No. 197 of the Woodmen of the World hosts Marshfield camp and lady’s drill team in Coquille Friday. A 7:30 parade through town leads to a meeting, drill show, games, and a luncheon with cake coffee and chocolate followed by dancing for the evening.
Mrs. O. H. Clarke hosted a Tuesday night dinner at her Ash Street residence to honor Miss Cecil McCready of Portland who will open a Rose City studio this fall. Guests included Mildred Drake, Mrs. Oliver Clarke and Marilyn Clarke of Newberg, A. G. Thompson and Carl of Berkeley, and the host and hostess.
Sunday evening a collision on Powers road about one mile above Breadbent sent F W Martin manager of a Coquille chain store and E J Ruble and Lea He Carr from the county seat to a shallow ditch. Ruble suffered a head wound needing three stitches. Hig hesites were cared for at Mast hospital.
Rev. E. G. Ranton attends a convention accompanied by his son Leonard, a church event noted in local society coverage.
