Elliot Paul, author of The Last Time I Saw Paris, faced his deathbed conversion at age 68. Once agnostic, he requested a special bedside ceremony to be accepted into the Greek Orthodox Church, a tardy but sincere turn amid his celebrated literary career.
The Myrtle Point Herald offers new and old subscribers a half price yearly rate of $1.50 during the Coos County Fair Thursday through Saturday to celebrate its 70th birthday. Residents of Coos County only. payment can be sent by a friend if visiting town is not possible. The deal funds the paper’s goal to cover 100 percent of its trade area.
A Herald telephone report says 20 logging trucks from the Bone Mountain area are tied up at Remote on Monday morning. Independent truckers demand an extra $150 per thousand for hauling logs for Crowley Bros and Nelson Logging, who sell to Cool Head Timber Co. Spokesmen Roy Porter and Mac McCalligan say negotiations are pending. The strike aims to secure the wage increase and will continue until met.
An editorial argues America is sliding toward socialism as labor bosses spend heavily to elect Democrats and shape policy. It cites Wayne Morse’s campaign financing and summarizes 1956 labor political spending totaling about 1.63 million dollars across major unions, with continued discussion on page two.
Miss Linda Molthu daughter of Mr and Mrs O E Molthu of Coquille and a Coquille High School 1958 graduate was crowned Rodeo Queen of the 1958 Coos County Fair at a coronation in the Coquille Community Building. The event was sponsored by the Coos County Mounted Sheriff's Posse with runners up Miss Sally Schlatter Myrtle Point and Miss Linda George Coquille. The Posse will also enter Queen Linda in the Miss Rodeo of Oregon contest.
Mrs Glen Hutton speaks again at the First Christian church Sunday on The Value of Words. She has filled the pulpit during Mr Hutton’s May illness as he rests from a heart attack and gradual recovery continues.
Don Lucas of the Agnes Community Council announced the Agness Barbecue and Rogue River Bust Race prize radio winner. Mrs Jack Laird of Coos Bay held ticket number 1143 and claimed the portable radio after verifying the duplicate.
State Highway Commission notes two bids let July 29 for Gravelford bridge over North Fork Coquille river northeast of Myrtle Point at 128 803 and for grading paving and a 90 foot concrete bridge on the Coos Bay Roseburg highway 42 west from Myrtle Point at 631 055. Sig Anderson of Coos Bay and F L Somers of Medford are the winning bidders.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce held its Monday noon meeting at Myrtlewood Park to inspect a four in one kitchen being erected by the Myrtle Point Rotary club. Bil Downing presided in the absence of President Al Wyld who is recovering from a heart attack. Harold Rushing introduced Wallace Dement who recounted the park’s history from its purchase by P W Laird and Lou Pearce to its donation to the city and Rotary sponsorship since inception.
Parents in Myrtle Point are invited to have their children photographed for publication in the Myrtle Point Herald at the Legion Hall today, Thursday August 7, from 10 am to 6 pm. No fee or appointment required. an expert photographer will take the pictures.
The eighth annual Coos Bay Wagon Road picnic will be at Jackson State Park in Coos Bay Sunday August 10. The event includes a potluck dinner with ice cream and lemonade supplied by the association and invites all to enjoy a shade under the myrtle grove. participants with harmonicas and violins are urged to bring them and join the fun.
J L Smith promotes the Coos County Baked Bread contest as prizes for top bakers grow. Ada Thomma chairs the awards committee and lists donations including a trip to the Oregon State Fair, box seats, flour packages, yeast, sugar, bread boards, and aluminum supplies from local sponsors.
The 47th annual Coos County Fair opens entry day Wednesday and runs through Sunday August 17. Sam Dement presides as fair board president as department heads meet to finalize plans for Oregon's fastest growing county fair.
The Myrtle Point Fire Department responded to two calls Tuesday between 9 and 10. A dryer fire at John H Burgess’s home caused damage to the unit and a smoky kitchen. A gasoline fire occurred when a truck used as a boom tipped over at the Pierce rail on Maple Street during mill burner work. Fire Chief Mitch Myers urged residents to shut off irrigation when the siren sounds to preserve water pressure.
The First Junior Horse Show at the Myrtle Point fairgrounds drew riders from Southern Oregon including Grants Pass Camas Valley Roseburg Salem Mapleton and Coos County groups. Gary Carroll of Coquille won the high point trophy with 22 points, with other top finishers Harvey Jones Jerri Garrett Judy Strode and Judy Alborn. Local sponsors donated trophies and a cow boy breakfast was provided by Evans Dairy.
Sunday August 17 features an 8 AM start with home economics award in the morning and a grand entry in the afternoon. A livestock parade runs before the grandstand, followed by a professional rodeo calf scramble in the evening and a checkout period.
