Red Cross officials set schedules for beginners and intermediate sessions with buses to Sugarloaf and Myrtle Point. Supervisors Mrs Larsen and Mrs Ocheltree to oversee after noon class. Marlin D Evans drives buses. Strict conduct rules may lead to exclusion from future lessons.
The Alder Street sewer extension from 2nd to H streets won approval from the State Sanitation Authority. Plans and maps were prepared by Cornell Howland Hayes and Merrifield of Corvallia. No start date was set, but construction is hoped to begin soon.
The Myrtle Point police department received a new panel truck for traffic checks and nightly patrols. The ID4R Chevrolet panel was purchased for $170.30 from Southwestern Motors in Coquille and will soon bear city markings and lights with a siren already installed.
Coos County Fair adds eight thousand dollars in prizes for three market lambs to be judged August 20 to 22. First place 25 dollars, second 15 dollars, third 10 dollars, with judges and officials including Howard Leatherman and Willis Van Léeuwen coordinating the event.
In Brewster valley near here two cougars were killed after an all night chase. Barklow and Meyers said one cougar measured six feet three inches, with hounds losing four animals after a cliff plunge during the pursuit. The hunters tracked, cornered, and killed the second cougar after breakfast.
Frank Hen president of the Myrtle Point Rotary club returned Monday evening after a visit to Portland and Longview Washington for a quarterly assembly of Rotary club officials called by the district governor.
An Oregon Nevada California Fast Freight truck failed to turn at Powers Junction last Saturday evening. The trailer overturned, demolishing E. F Hoffman’s corner garage. Driver Paul Edward Hutchings from Portland was transporting a cheese trailer from Superior Cheese Co. Two cars inside the garage were damaged and reports mention dynamite caps and a gasoline tank found among debris. This marks a second recent garage damage from failed turns. The driver was uninjured. Mountain States Power Co issued a letter to the Myrtle Point city council defending its franchise obligation to station a lineman locally. The note recalls two former linemen, Miller and Pook, who were killed while on duty and states ongoing searches for a capable replacement. Manager William J B Mead says a four year apprenticeship policy for journeymen linemen is now in place, with two third year apprentices currently residents of Myrtle Point.

The Myrtle Point Lions club accepted a challenge from the American Legion Poet for a baseball game to be played tonight under the high school lights. Lions demand nine Legion players only, while the Lions may field any number. game time is 8 o'clock.
H O Chapman general agent for the West Coast Telephone Co and George McBride manager of the Coos Bay ranch visited this week promising improved service. One new line was added to Roseburg bringing four lines to that exchange and plans were under way to complete a third position on the local switchboard and install another line to Coquille. No information was given on when lines may be opened between Myrtle Point and Coos Bay due to material and labor shortages delaying operators.
Dick Johnson, chairman of the grammar and junior high school board in Myrtle Point, said a new 10,000 gallon oil storage tank has been ordered and will arrive in about two weeks. Upon installation, new oil burners for the grammar school heating plant will be ready for the upcoming school year. Lockers and bookshelves have been installed at the junior high building and floors repaired during the vacation.
Mrs Bessie Ravenburg sister of Forest L Moon died in Portland hospital Sunday after months of illness. Funerals were held in Vancouver yesterday. She is survived by husband J B Ravenburg daughter Betty son Orson brother Forest L Moon and family of Myrtle Point and other relatives. Mrs Moon and Mr Moon were in Portland several weeks and left Sunday to attend the funeral.
Ralph T. Moore spoke to the Lions Club noting the Highway Interim Committees functions and reported progress since formation. He said the Roseburg-Coos Bay highway situation remains uncertain but deserves direct state highway commission focus soon while promoting local “home rule” for roads. Guests included Verle Christensen, Dave Doperalski, Gale Meredith and John Vinci Jr.
Work to improve Maple Street from Fifth to the railroad depot and along River Roads will proceed as funds allow. Twenty six carloads of rock are in and the hot mix surfacing contract was let by the state. Harris Street from Fourth to Eighth was resurfaced with a heavy oiling finish completed last Monday.
A southern district near town discusses joining the city at the general election. A petition to annexation was presented to the city council. If the area votes against joining, several outcomes were noted, including continued water services from outside the city.
Word reached Gaylord that the two year old son of Mr and Mrs E S Montgomery was recovered from an irrigation ditch near Phoenix Oregon after several days missing. The child was identified by Bob Epson and another boy who were playing nearby. Mrs Grace Carlisle of Gaylord had traveled by bus to inform relatives of the tragedy.
John Amort sustained injuries in a woods accident and was transported by Flater ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland this morning.
Fire destroyed a truck and hay on Gravelfield road near Myrtle Point last Saturday afternoon. Fire was started by a spark from the exhaust. Robert was uninjured in the incident.
The Community Cannery in Myrtle Point will begin operations on Saturday August 7 if reservations for 1000 cans are made by then. Reservations are via Mrs. Paul Davis or Mrs. Mable Barklow with details on produce and estimated can count. Canners must supply their own items. cans are sealed and processed by the cannery with pricing by can size and contents.
