Pioneer Sunday Picnic Draws 300 in Myrtle Grove

The Seventh annual Southwestern Otago Pioneers Association picnic drew about 300 at Myrtle Grove Coquille on Sunday. Attendees arrived around 10 30 am for benches and tables with a noon basket lunch followed by a program at the community building.

Local Myrtle Paint Union High names new staff

The Myrtle Paint Union High School filled vacancies with Miss Helen Austin to teach homemaking and Miss Reta Fry to head the English department. The staff will be complete for the opening on Tuesday September 3. Miss Austin recently graduated from USC and will also advise the Girls' League. Miss Fry trained at Teachers College in South Dakota MacPhail in Minnesota and the University of Oregon and brings broad experience plus honors as a violinist. She will supervise high school dramatics and has contributed to community plays this summer.

Coquille IOOF Meeting Draws Local Visitors

Four Coquille IOOF members hosted visitors Sherman Morris and Earl Schroeder from other lodges on a Wednesday evening. Morris, the new noble grand, spoke on fellowship and said they plan to visit all Coos County lodges. Schroeder shared a hospital visit story and cited the order’s sick calls. An invitation was extended for Myrtle Point IOOF to attend Friday’s meeting.

Old School District 2 Founded Near Broad S In 1857

Coos County's early District No. 2 covered the Coquille valley above Coquille river, near Broad Bend and Broadbent. Classes began in 1867 with teacher Congressman Binger Hermann, and many local students later passed away. The current Broad Bend schoolhouse has two teachers serving Broad Bend and nearby areas, offering a limited curriculum.

The annual Grangers and Farmers day picnic at Fairview Park is set for Sunday with both groups invited. Attendees are asked to bring their own basket lunches. activities include swimming baseball and other games for all to enjoy.

Coos Granges Reserve First Community Booths at Fair

Two Coos Granges catch Inlet and Remote Greapes reserve the first community booths for the Coos County Fair to be held September 11 12 13 and 14 in Myrtle Point. Booth prices are 25 for the first and 15 for each additional booth. A $16 award from the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce goes to the winning booth along with the fair’s 25. The secretary reports the Bonnieville Dam exhibit and uniformed Eagles drill teams will participate. The Powers High School band provides music on Thursday Friday and North Bend is involved with the Coos Bay Pirates in Marshfield assisting with the fair’s success.

Car trunk door injury sends man to hospital

An unusual accident Sunday at about 8 30 p m caused severe head bruises and lacerations to Mari Laird of Sitkum when the trunk lid slipped and fell while he was getting an article from the compartment. Laird was taken to Mast hospital Monday morning and is reported to be recovering satisfactorily.

Worker Hurt By Falling Limb At Camp

Dr J W Moore and Stanley Phillips took Everett Lewis to Mast hospital after a limb struck his head and shoulders near the M J Morrison camp about ten miles from Powers. Lewis, an employee, suffered severe snurles on head and shoulders while near a bull dozer.

Masters and Wardens Hold Valley Picnic Gathered

About 250 people attended the district No. 12 Masters and Wardens association picnic at Shrine Grove on Hardy Mast ranch in Lee. Howard Helmboldt of North Bend led the event with lodges from Bandon Gardiner Powers Marshfield Coquille Myrtle Point Ldnglots Gold Beach North Bend and Port Orford represented. A noon potluck accompanied by ice cream and coffee followed. Myrtle Point won in horseshoe and racing contests while Coquille Valley base ball defeated Coog Hay. Miss Valene Beers of Lakeview arrived for a visit with her brother and sister in law H J Peteres.

The Junior Christian Emdeavor society held a potluck in church parlors with a social hour and meeting. Members listed include Marion Hoxey Harold Lee Ray Lucille Strong and others. August break announced. Floyd Summers hosted K Klub dessert luncheon. Merry Matrons and Royal Neighbors met with bridge sewing and pinochle. Brethren conference at Camp Myrtlewood concluded after a week with Cordlle Weise and Rev Edward Ziegler as main speakers.
