In the days before the angling season opening the Middle Fork of the Coquille ran muddy with water from Rock Creek blamed on John Cawrse. Mrs. Cawrse learned the rumor and defended her husband amid fishing circles as the source and motive were debated.
Elbert F. Hall Jr. arrives in Myrtle Point after 18 months in Korea with the engineer corps, discharged from Fort Lewis, after serving in Taiga Seoul Taiga Pusan and two trips to Japan. He plans to finish his education at Oregon State College and enjoys civilian life with family and friends.
The week’s papers contrast vast POW exchanges by the United Nations and Chinese forces with front line carnage in Korea. Soldiers, maimed and weary, lie on stretchers as cannons boom in the distance, three years of fighting continuing with shifting gains and losses.

Myrtle Point Future Farmers of America hosts its annual field day at the Coos County Fair grounds on Friday May 8 with local implement dealers invited. Attendees may see and operate the latest farm equipment as the arena and race track are prepared for demonstrations. Refreshments will be served by the FFA chapter.
The W. R. Davenport herd of 11 Jerseys from Myrtle Point earned an average of 10 343 pounds of milk with 617 pounds of butterfat per cow during a 12 month test. The official test was conducted under Oregon State College supervision with The American Jersey Cattle Club in Columbus Ohio.
The First Presbyterian Church invites families to attend a special May 3 service at 11 am with families seated together and roles assigned for welcoming, readings, music, and other participation. The pastor will speak on Building and Rebuilding. A Mothers Day celebration is planned for May 10. Mr and Mrs Ben Daniels and four sons visited the Walter Moore family in Roseburg.
Thomas Poffenberger of Oregon State College will greet Coos County Homemakers at Marshfield High School Auditorium on May 5. Guest speaker Mrs Iva Kilpatrick president of the Oregon Home Economics Council will discuss ACWW Its Place in Home Extension and present slides from travels to Denmark and Europe for the Associated Country Women of the World conference in Copenhagen in 1951.
Six year olds by November 15 are invited to visit the first grade at Maple Primary on Maple Street. The event is set for a Wednesday afternoon from 1 to 2 30 p m with notice received from Director Olga Ropes regarding completion of arrangements.
Harris Ellsworth argues that most high level policy making staffers in the Truman era must be removed to enable a genuinely new Eisenhower administration. He cites the Bureau of Land Management director as an example and says the president cannot govern effectively with former appointees in key roles.

Gordon Britton of Denmark received a registered Jersey heifer calf from the Coos Curry Jersey Cattle Club at a meeting held at the W R Davenport dairy near Myrtle Point. The award honors the outstanding 4 H dairy club member in Coos or Curry counties. other honorees included Joanne Davenport Jeanne Davenport Donald Messerle Kenneth Messerle and Ervin Royer. Cadman presented the calf, praising its breeding and suggesting it serve as a future herd foundation. the calf's sire is Tristam Lord Eagle rated excellent.
Miss Lilian Farley announces that Coos County schools received 579 846 80 from the Basic School Support fund via checks from Salem. Large district totals include Empire District 6 60 365 83 Coquille 67 560 56 Coos Bay District 9C 149 610 25 North Bend 85 Myrtle Point 38 586 Bandon 53 623.
Coos Bay residents are invited to a Shrine Mel Venter Show this Saturday night hosted by Ellon Schroeder and Ray Collier Shriners. The event will host disabled children under 15 as guests with transportation provided by contacting Paul the Masical. The public performance features top national acts and supports the Shriners charity.
Owing to the fishing season opening many golfers have not yet qualified for the Spring Handicap at the Golf and Country Club. The 18 hole qualifying time is extended to next Sunday evening May 3 to allow players to submit scores. Buck Elliott, the course manager, has staff working on course improvements while players were out Sunday despite cloudy skies and light rain.
Six American Red Cross girls aid UN returnees at Freedom Village with comfort bags stationery and reading materials. Red Cross Field Director Jim Hudson oversees care with plans for free telephone calls or 50 word cables home for each POW.
The U S Bureau of Land Management will build a 58 mile access road across the Smith River region to haul about 3 billion board feet of timber. About 55 percent is BLM, 12 percent national forest, 20 percent Long Bell Lumber, and 4 percent other private owners.
Patrons of School District No 41 C are urged to study the budget as the Myrtle Point Herald notes the 211 680 rise in valuation cuts millage by 6 mills though the next year’s budget is 8 328 higher. Major increases include 16 615 for teachers and added staff in coming year. Steven Goddard, son of Mr and Mrs G B Goddard, was seriously burned in an explosion near where he played Friday April Ord was taken to Providence hospital.
