Home Makers to Meet in Coquille for Planning Day

County extension delegates from nineteen units gather at Lincoln High School in Coquille on Friday April 28 to plan demonstrations for the coming year. Thrift Stores To Close For War Duration At Myrtle Point And Coquille

The Thrift grocery operations in Myrtle Point and Coquille will close within weeks for the war duration. Ralph Thrift of Coquille announced the plan, with Eddie Miles managing the Myrtle Point store and Hamilton Thrift serving in Iceland. Stocks will be sold or stored, buildings retained, and all to reopen after hostilities end.

Former Resident Byron J Young Dies in California

Byron J Young formerly of Myrtle Point died April 18 in Oakland California after traveling to assist his son. Funeral services were held at Finley Sons Mortuary in Portland with interment at Riverview Cemetery. Surviving are three sons Fay Clare and Clayton. three daughters Helen Endicott and Mrs Fred McMullen of Portland and Mrs Evelyn Boree of Aumaville. a sister Mrs Paull of Marshfield. two brothers Ed and Bob Young of Bandon.

Band and Glee Club to Present Spring Concert

The High School band and Glee Club will perform a joint Spring Concert on May 5 at 8 p.m. in the high school gym. The hour long program will be shared equally between the two groups under directors Miss Parent and Mr C P McNab.

Older Pioneers Honored at Monday Meeting

A Monday afternoon gathering at the Presbyterian church honored community pioneers aged 80 and above. The Women’s club sponsored the program and luncheon with awards for the oldest man L F Nekleigh and oldest woman Mrs Katie Arnold, plus recognition for many residents with long tenures and multiple attendees listed.

Fallen Tree Delays Mail Truck in SITKUM

A large tree blocked the road near Devil's Gate delaying the mail truck and a school bus until it was cut through twice. The truck and bus reached Myrtle Point around noon. Local residents and visitors attended services at the gym that evening and various townspeople were noted in short social items.

Cougar Seen and Killed Near Neal Ranch

A large cougar was sighted crossing a highway near Jim Neal's ranch early Tuesday morning and was killed by Government Trapper Mullena near Neal's home. Nearby, Lt. Leonard Medlock graduates from Army Air Force Pilot School at Ft. Summer New Mexico. James Deverraux and brother John attended a funeral in Eureka California for their uncle Michael Larkin.
