Loyalty Day origins and the Washington Youth Tour winner

The Loyalty Day chairman explains the Congress act framing May 1 as a patriotic day against communism. Grace Cushing, Myrtle Point, wins the Washington Youth Tour trip after winning local and county contests. second and third place receive bonds. Eighty eight high school juniors entered from Sunset Six high schools. Grace will travel to Portland and Washington DC with other state winners.

Van Doren Home Burglarized During Funeral Week

Police Chief Merlyn Hathaway reports the burglary of Mrs. Florence Van Doren’s home at 1102 Spruce. The crime occurred between 9 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday, April 19, while the funeral day was observed. Items missing include an antique mantle clock a coin collection jewelry and antique ceramics. An investigation is ongoing.

Private Patrick McCue stationed with Company C Strategic Command II in Seoul since January met cook Kent Brown of the 304th Signal Battalion on Easter Sunday in the mess hall. Pvt James Blohm, 18, son of Mr and Mrs Roy Blohm, arrived home Saturday April 13 from Ft Ord California and will report to Ft Devens Massachusetts on April 26.

Longtime Mast Hospital chief resigns after 50 years

Mes Loisanes Wagner announces resignation as Hospital Administrator at Mast Hospital after half a century in the role. She will stay as medical records librarian. Caspar Paulson of Independence Oregon will replace her on May 1, having previously served as Hospital Administrator at Hermiston Oregon. The Paulsons currently reside in Coquille.

Pioneer Day at Presbyterian Church Hosted by Myrtle Point Women's Club

The Myrtle Point Women’s Club hosts the 43rd annual Pioneer Day at the Presbyterian Church on April 26 at 1 30 p.m. Wallace Cement is the speaker and a musical program is planned. All pioneers in the area are invited. Special recognition will be given to the older attendees.

Jim Jarvis Escapes Riot After Pittsburg Game

Former Coquille star Jim Jarvis recounts a harrowing night at the Civic Arena in Pittsburg after a game with the Pittsburgh Pipers against the Minnesota Muskies. He says an angry crowd reportedly followed players to the dressing room and menaced the arena as security warned of a mob forming.

Broadbent Bridge Demolished and Transit Re-routed

The old wooden Broadbent Bridge over the South Fork of the Coquille River was blown down at 1 5 a.m. on an April Wednesday to clear space for a 292 ft concrete span. Traffic will use the west riverbank and students will be bused via the Powers highway to Myrtle Point and Broadbent schools.

DeMolay Boys Enjoy Basketball Game at Myrtle Point High

Coquille Myrtle Point Chapter and Edward B. Beaty Chapter of Coos Bay held a basketball game on April 17 at Myrtle Point High School Gym. DeMolay sponsors social events athletics civic projects and fundraisers. Myrtle Point joins Operation Outreach with Arthur Motz as advisor urging recruitment for a Myrtle Point chapter.
