Hatchery Steelhead Outgrows Wild Counterpart In Early Life
The passage compares a hatchery reared Alees steelhead and a wild Nestucca steelhead. The hatchery fish grew rapidly, reaching 8 inches at one year and 23 inches by its second year, due to abundant hatchery food and faster early maturation. The Nestucca fish remained smaller, at 3½ inches after year one and about 7 inches in year two.
