The District 41 school board voted Monday night to hire Gerald Bennett, currently Gilcrest High School principal in northern Klamath County, to replace Joe Mewart as superintendent. Bennett has 12 years service as teacher and principal, with a feature profile planned for the Herald.

Standard Oil to close Myrtle Point bulk plant
Jin Howe, local Standard Oil distributor, says the company will phase out the Myrtle Point bulk plant within two years as it shifts to centralized jobbers. Plans to phase out bulk plants in Bandon, Reedsport, and Coquille will serve customers from the Corus Bay plant, harming small accounts. Ray J. Clarno of Myrtle Point is appointed executive vice president of Albers Milling Company, a division of Carnation. Clarke A. Nelson becomes general manager reporting to GA Ensinger.
