Myrtle Point library board met Friday afternoon at the Myrtle hotel with all members present. The report showed funds and book activity, a new children's room was set up, and a plan to seek a tax levy at the next general election was proposed to secure stable finances.
The Herald announces two new features: backyard gardening articles with illustrations and a Take it From Dad column by a knowledgable writer. The garden pieces aid in improving premises after the garden club formed, while Take it From Dad offers practical homely philosophy for boys and guidance for parents toward constructive, honorable careers.
A Ford roadster said to be driven by Buster Braley and bearing a California license plowed through the fence on North Fork road opposite the tourist park Saturday evening. The car continued under its own power as Braley summoned helpers and drove into the auto park, forcing an opening in the park fence before leaving.
April 16 marks the opening of sport fishing in Oregon. After that date trout six inches may be taken from open streams not closed by the state game commission. Steelhead fishing has been exceptionally good this winter. Tide water trout must be at least ten inches, fish above tide water at least sixteen inches. After April 16 any trout of any length is legal.
The Myrtle Point Herald announces a free cooking school on Thursday and Friday next week from 2 to 5 PM in the hotel room beside Harlocker pharmacy. Mrs Irene Kerr of Westinghouse Electric will demonstrate with the Flavor Zone oven on the electric range and show stored heat cooking methods. All ladies are urged to attend both days.
Dairymen will view dairy demonstrations at the county fair in September. The fair board plans expanded exhibits with Smith-Hughes schools and more amusements. Browning Carnival Co. adds rides under contract with the fair association and Marshfield hosts the next meeting May 13.
The Easter Cantata Victory by H W Petrie will be performed by the combined choirs of the Presbyterian Christian and Methodist churches on Easter Sunday evening at the Methodist church. Misa Claudia Parker is the pianist and Mrs Beatrice Abels is the director. Those taking part are practicing diligently and all who enjoy such services are invited to attend.
In Murphy hall Pomona Grange of Coon county elected Henry Gustafson of North Bend master to replace removed Arthur Brown by two votes 37 to 35. Mrs H H Hanson of Langola was chosen lecturer. Executive committee picks went to Jr Capps Langlois Harold James Bridge BR E Christensen Parkersburg van Laird McKinley George Hamston Arago.
Two gentlemen from Marshfield toured the Seaman room beside the Myrtle Point Meat Co. and expressed plans to open a groceries and feed store in Myrtle Point. They noted the favorable location but must consult another party before final arrangements.
Guy R. Merriman, longtime resident who left Myrtle Point thirty years ago, died in Campbell California after a fall from a truck. He was a Mason Morning Light Lodge member and Congregational church official. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregational church, with interment at Los Gatos cemetery.
The city announces spring water from the pumping plant is exhausted and pumps will switch to North Fork river water tomorrow. Water Superintendent Bert Pearson cites a dry season and low spring flow causing cloudy water. The note also remarks on modern politicians and radio announcers.
A Friday evening performance of Kempy at the high school by the junior class promises wit and humor. The plot centers on a high-spirited daughter who marries a plumber to humor a rival, with lively, wholesome company work and regional charm. Admission is adults 65 cents, students 25 cents, with reserved seats 75 cents.
State Fire Marshal warns of fire and sanitation hazards urging clear vacant lots and unobstructed sidewalks. Marshfield mayor proposes an ordinance to compel owners to remove debris while council orders police to keep business district signs and obstacles clear.
The Garden club will meet next Monday evening at city hall with Mrs. T. L. Henness speaking on Questions that have been asked and A. M. Cooper on Early Novelty flowers. The club credits its influence with improving yards and parking strips along the highway as residents remove weeds and debris from vacant lots despite crowded schedules.
E L Clausen, prominent Broad Bend rancher, has received a half ton of Grimm alfalfa seed and has distributed it to ranchers from Myrtle Point to Powers. Several Broad Bend ranchers have sown alfalfa and report a good stand now.
County Clerk Watson urges all residents to register for the May 16 primary, noting swearing in at polls is no longer allowed. Those not voting in the past two years or changing precincts must register by April 16. previously registered voters need not repeat. Encourage friends to act now to avoid disappointment on election day.
A warning from Endicott urges dog owners to keep pets secured, warning that fines will be imposed without exception. The notice stresses strict enforcement and compliance.
Harold James ranch three miles south of Bridow reports a Saturday morning blaze that destroyed a newly built berm barn. Fire started around eight o'clock as he backed his car. Loss includes canned fruit and 150 dollars worth of live rabbits. Damage partially insured. James recovering from a heart attack, hard hit to the farm.
The Bandon chamber appeals to Senator McNary to protect the Port of Bandon entrance as the north jetty disintegrates under heavy seas. Myrtle Point chamber backs the request citing boats tied up due to the harbor’s dangerous condition. The groups discuss school and community funding and plans to aid girls’ education and local students’ expenses.
Myrtle Point Herald lands the county court contract to print the delinquent tax list for 1926. The list will fill at least eight pages in the standard newspaper format and publication starts within the next few weeks.
Myrtle Point High students Robert Clark and Verna Knight won first place in the county extempore speaking and interpretive reading contests held at the North Bend Presbyterian Church. Professor Young of OSC judged both events. Local winners advance to the state meet in Corvallis with expenses paid.
Joe Ellis and Clarence Miller of Myrtle Point were arrested by Curry County officers on suspicion of stealing hogs from the Miller ranch. The defendants posted bonds and await judgment before the Curry County grand jury.
