Rev Neil Fisher, pastor of the Bridge Community Church, will lead a week's series of pre Easter services at the Bridge Church. Meetings start each evening at 7 30 o clock from April 17. The public is invited to attend.
The Myrtle Point Sportsmen's Club will host its 12th annual Easter ham and bacon shoot on Sunday April 10 starting at 10 am at the club grounds. Cats and ammunition will be available, with prizes for all participants.
Myrtle Point High asks firms and families needing summer help to contact Mrs. Manley Starr at the high school. The girls offer typing and shorthand, dictation, and waiter or housework duties, including mother’s helper roles.
The Coos Curry Pioneer and Historical Association will meet at the Coos Curry Museum in North Bend on Saturday April 9 at 1 00 pm. The gathering will include a committee report on a May 15 tea event with Coquille Valley women serving cake and coffee after the meeting.
The Myrtle Point Inter-church Fellowship holds its regular monthly meeting Monday April 11 at the Methodist church. A panel on Holy Week and Easter will headline after a 6 30 potluck dinner. The executive council meets first at 6 00.
A Myrtle Point reader questions the Myrtle Point Shopper published from Coquille and asks why local merchants should spend money at home. The Herald replies that it backs home-town buying, noting its 70 years of community service, local payroll, and investment, and vows to continue boosting Myrtle Point businesses.
Dr James K. Frederick presents The Greatest Story Ever Told in Eastrian color and wide screen at the Hiland theatre on April 12 and 13. Merchants of Myrtle Point join the Junior Chamber of Commerce in offering free 50c tickets to reduce admission to 1.00 for students and 1.00 for adults with tickets, otherwise 1.50 for adults and 1.00 for students.
District Supervisor Harold Clarno explains census takers start April 1. Each worker wears a red white and blue official badge from the Department of Commerce with the title Census Enumerator Official Credential. Report any impersonators to the local office at Clarno's Variety Store Myrtle Point. The brown portfolio bears 1980 Census of the United States and holds supplies. Enumerators listed: Myrtle Point area Galloway Albertson Brown Clausen Harding Roas Vier.
Ben Brodie son of Elden and Mrs Brodie earns valedictorian honors at Myrtle Point High School graduation. Leila Schroeder and Margaret Rasmussen share salutatorian roles. Ben plans engineering at Oregon State College, Leila aims for psychology at Oregon or Willamette, Margaret studies law at the University of Oregon.
Myrtle Point high school students compete for twenty three scholarships of 5090 each funded by Oregon Nevada California Fast Freight. Stan S Hogate, manager, says cities with 60000 population are involved. The judging committee in Coos County includes Clarence Oqeaka chairman and others: Rilah Suller, Clarence Bartah Caouille, Robert Powrie, John Fosnacht.
The Community Recreation Planning board met Wednesday evening and formed a three citizen nominating committee to select nine board members. The committee will report Thursday evening at 8 p m in the round chambers. Representatives of community organizations are urged to attend.
An interdenominational Good Friday service is set for April 15 from 12:00 to 3:00 PM at the Methodist church. Ministers Glen Montz Edwin Hepner Marshall Faulk Herbert Baker Arvin Johnson Glen Hutton Lloyd Swenson and Earl Horsell will lead, with special music by Myrtle Point High School music department directed by Mrs Earl Dement.
Easter Seal sales begin nationwide to aid crippled children with Myrtle Point leaders Mrs J M Myers and Mrs Howard Rackleff chairing local efforts. Containers will be placed in business houses and street solicitations occur Saturday with corsages offered to donors to boost funds.
A three day hearing and course on watershed management was organized by Oregon State College to promote best multiple use of timber water and soil. About 120 attendees from the Northwest participated.
Willamette University acapella choir performs at Myrtle Point High School Monday April 11 at 10 am with parents welcome. The group is completing a southern Oregon and California tour and will end Sunday night at 8 pm. On April 10 they sing at Pioneer Methodist Church in Coquille. Two Myrtle Point members are Geranna Stevens and Judith Starr.
The Myrtle Hotel hosted the fourth annual installation of Myrtle Point Junior Chamber of Commerce officers last Wednesday March 30. Jack Spindle of Roseburg national director of the Oregon Jaycees installed the new officers. Awards night featured key man certificates for Del McFeron Joe Nichols and Richard Severson. Duplicate key man of the year awards were given to Paul Clute and Ray Henshaw after a deadlock vote by the board of directors.
The Herald reports a tiny Northwest town of about 300 residents claims status as a busy industrial center. Norply Veneer Co leads with 72 workers, followed by Acme Wood Products with 12, and Norway Ashery employing four, plus Bewley & Sons with nine and a pellet mill with three. Three planer mills and a saw mill also operate, serving national and international markets.
Southwestern Oregon projects from first graders to high schoolers will be on display at Washington Elementary School in Coquille Friday April 8 from 700 to 930 p.m and Saturday April 9 from 1000 to 500 and 700 to 930 p.m Admission is free Winners advance to the regional science fair in Coquille judged by science teachers and teams from Reedsport North Bend Coos Bay Empire Bandon Myrtle Point and Coquille Special winners advance to the Northwest Science Fair at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland April 23-30
Two Myrtle Point businesses have changed names this past week. Jack Dunn's TV Systems, Inc. moved from 512 Spruce to the End's garage corner at 6th and Spruce. Peat's Melody Shop relocated from the hotel building to the former TV room. Newell's Dutch Maid Coinomatic laundry, at 908 Spruce, installed a new electric sign along Myrtle Point's gay white way.
Mr and Mrs Marton Lakey left Tuesday to reside at Arcata California. They expect to spend the summer there.
