Well Known Attorney and Banker J W Bennett Dies
Marshfield mourns Joseph William Bennett prominent lawyer banker of Marshfield died after a long illness at his residence. Born in Bandon Ireland on April 21 1855 he came to Coos county in 1873. He helped run the Coos Bay News and formed the Flanagan Bennett bank with Patrick Flanagan in 1889 later leading multiple banks and civic roles. Funeral held at Marshfield Episcopal church with Masons in charge. large county gathering.

The City Council adjourned meeting opened three bids for alley paving in block eleven. Langston Construction Co. bid 1.40 per square yard and is expected to be awarded after owner approval. Bids for the Myrtle Point Refunding bonds attracted eleven offers, Lumbermen's Trust Co. topping with par value, accrued interest and a 350 bonus.

The Coos Bay Times reports the steamship Congress fire at the Coos Bay entrance after transfer of 413 aboard from the Tillamook and A. M. Simpson. Captain George Seely of the Michie led the rescue with swift action, salvaging most lives as flames raged through the decks.

Dorothea Overton of Gravel Ford wed Henrick Thorsen of La Center Washington on September 15 at the Overton home. Rev Thos Barklow officiated as Bion Whitehouse served as man of honor and Wilda Overton as maid. After a noon meal the couple left for Portland then Camas to begin life on their Camas farm with hope for happiness.
