Also in Hood River news former resident J F Strong has sold twenty acres of Odell orchard land to Smith Bros for 5200 and plans to relocate to Washougal Washington. Dr M O Stemmler has two near death escapes while making country calls. The Curry county land fraud cases in Portland federal court sent several to jail or fines. Grange meeting at Smiths hall featured papers on school ethics and clover alfalfa topics with local recitations and remarks by dairy men.

Big land opening opens Oregon timber dairy land to settlers
The General Land Office plans to withdraw 91800 acres from the Umpqua Forest Reserve on January 20 1909 in Coos Western and Douglas counties Oregon. Dairying and fruit lands go under the Homestead Act while timber lands fall under timber and stone law. Squatters rights will be recognized with settlers allowed after December 21. A nearby Drain to Marshfield railroad line bisects the tract, and ninety two quarter sections near Myrtle Point will be opened including listed sections in Lognenipas and surrounding townships.
