County Judge John F Hall will end his eight year tenure and retire at term’s end to resume law practice in Marshfield. He cites inadequate pay and heavy workload as reasons. The speech was given in Coquille on Monday.
Sir Joseph Beecham says his firm spent five million dollars on newspaper advertising in ten years and expects more. Cal M. King wins University of Oregon student body presidency, an honor chosen by peers. Hermann's hall dance praised as the season’s finest with plans for another event next Saturday.
Myrtle Point High School and a pickup squad from former players held a four quarter scrimmage at the Fair Grounds. Clark Fensler served as referee and coach. The high school lineup featured Rackleff Robbins Sumerlin Wyland Robbins Spires Spires Rackleff Rackleff Spires Dement while Dr C H Day Cook Rackleff Spires McDonald Nash Lehmanowski Rose Lehnherr Innis. The scrubs competed hard but ran out of wind early. Final score 16 6 for the MPHS.
Lord George Bryant transfers his dray and transfer business to Joseph Hay who was in the wood business here. Hay takes over next Monday and Bryant remains in possession of a nine acre tract south of the Standish place possibly pursuing farming next year.
The Coos county fruit inspector, Hall-Lewis, resigned last week. the court has not appointed a successor. A Myrtle Point and Bridge Sections petition, with about seventy five names, argued the office be vacant because Hall-Lewis could not hold two paid posts.
William J. Leaton city recorder of Eastside was indicted by a Coquille grand jury for embezzling 3085 dollars of city funds and gambling. Bail set at 5000 for embezzlement and 500 for gambling. he is held for the December circuit court term with attorney R O Graves. D A Curry and William Warren were also charged. Curry pled guilty and was granted a 300 dollar bond.
The United States Post Office invites bids for star route mail contracts across many western states with bids due February 20 1914. Four year contracts run July 1 1914 to July 1 1918. Local figures show Myrtle Point handled about 107 592 pounds monthly including mail by road and water routes.
William J. Leaton city recorder of Coos Bay now in county jail on larceny indictments for 3085 dollars. Deserter from the U S Army per Marshal Carter with Army records showing enlistment in 1908 and desertion in Utah, trial period expired, not wanted by military authorities. Seaton reportedly arrived in Coos Bay five months ago under an assumed name and lost an arm in a logging camp accident.
Coos County officials project a higher tax levy next year with a preliminary total of about $190000 for the general road fund an increase of more than 30000 from this year. The commissioners plan to fix the levy December 6 after public retest hearings. They also appropriated 10000 for mothers pensions 2000 for agricultural experiments 10000 for advertising unpaid taxes and anticipate 3000 more in salary and possible court house room expansion due to a new tax collection system.
Superintendent A T Park attended a meeting of Coos county high school superintendents where plans for winter activities were outlined. Riverton will form a basketball team with a six game schedule after the holidays. Three institutes will be held in county towns this winter with about six weeks until the first, and speaker Pe Hodge of Boston is expected.
Rally Day at the Christian Church drew record attendance in morning and evening services. The Bible school presented a program and elected officers for the coming year. A basket dinner followed in the parlor as all departments showed steady growth. Baby Day is set for December 21 and Christmas on December 25. No services next Lord’s day due to pastor and Mrs. Coulter holding services in Bridge.
Gov West confirms the new county attorney system remains in place after a special election. Lilejqvist will serve as prosecuting attorney for Coos County while Meredith handles Curry County and Brown remains Douglas County’s. Lilejqvist vows a six month crackdown on gambling liquor and vice with a grand jury help.
State Game Warden Finley states a license is required to fish for any species including tom cod and bullheads. Deputy Warden Hall had circulated claims that licenses were unnecessary. The letter notes Oregon state law governs while federal rules do not allow selling ducks or migratory birds during the open season.

Walnut Grove Calif Nov 11 A marriage by proxy was held valid with P Advokaat marrying his sweetheart from Holland while she rested at her parents home and he worked on a ranch. the bride’s brother stood in for him. The ceremony followed Holland law and a properly attested Holland certificate validates the union in the United States.
The Rural Spirit rebukes Northwest fairs and stock shows for turning toward Wild West buckaroo displays. Webster of the American Sheep Breeder cites the Ohio State Fair at Columbus, noting the flood of pleasures from bird whistles to pyrotechnics. He warns glitter and gambling amusements threaten Ohio’s agricultural wealth and citizen character.
Pendleton Round-Up type shows attract a record audience at the Unique theater in Pendleton. Manager Schroe der notes the largest single performance crowd ever witnessed at the photo-pla house as the seven-reel feature rolled to end on Saturday morning.
