Centralized markets dominate U S livestock sales and co ops rise

A United States livestock survey finds three main marketing methods: centralized markets, local selling, and farm prepared meats. Central states move four-fifths of sheep and lambs, two-thirds of hogs, and about half of beef cattle through centralized markets. Local slaughter accounts for about one-third of beef cattle, one-eighth of sheep and lambs, and one-twentieth of hogs. Cooperatives with 750 cattle marketing groups in 15 states, led by Minnesota, cut costs and raise returns. The centralized market system stands as the nation’s key factor in meat marketing.
