Filling the Rogue with Gravel from Hydraulic Mines
The Rogue River upper reaches fill with gravel as many hydraulic mines dump into the river. Large schooners once drew sixteen feet here twenty years ago, now only a gravel bar. Deep seining grounds near Woodru and Bagnell are shallow pools, and eddies between here and the Illinois fill in. River silting washes away bottom land each winter, risking loss of farmland for Jackson and Josephine counties. The Gold Beach Globe warns urgent steps are needed to save the lower Rogue from becoming a dumping ground.
