Bandon High School Wins County Oratorical Contest
Kate Chatburn of Bandon High School won first place in the Coos county high school oratorical contest, with Leslie Isaacson of Marshfield second. The loving cup goes to Bandon for the year, and Chatburn receives the gold medal. Judges were Supt. Howard, Prof. Grubbs, Supts. Park and Tiedgen. Chatburn previously studied in Myrtle Point.

Mis taken for bear hunt ends in severe injuries
William Neal of Myrtle Point was shot by fellow hunter Jerry Huntley who mistook Neal for a bear above Rolland prairie. Neal, about 55, sustained a bullet wound through the right hand and a broken leg above the knee. He was cared for by Dr. Stemmler and will be returned home as his condition allows.

Four Victims of Ptomaine Poisoning Reported
Warren DeYoe of this city learned his Santa Rosa relatives revealed that four family members including three children on Sebastopol avenue and a visiting young woman suffered ptomaine poisoning after a supper of tinned salmon. Dr Scannell, aided by Mrs Felt, treated patients from 1 to 4 a.m. with the worst case the visiting young woman, who rivaled grave danger but later improved.

Two Small Roof Fires in Myrtle Point
Last Friday two incipient blazes hit Myrtle Point. A fire in the roof of the old Carver residence on Spruce Street near the Presbyterian church was extinguished by neighbors before the fire department arrived. Later a spark from a locomotive ignited the depot roof, but the station and yard crew put it out without aid. Damage in both incidents consisted of sizable roof holes.

New High School Planned At Myrtle Point
Myrtle Point voters approved bonds of 20 000 for a new two story 50 by 85 foot schoolhouse on the Reese Eadicott property two blocks north of the present brick school. The plan calls for eight rooms full basement and modern heating with repairs to the old building as finances allow.

Mall worker arrested on fraud charges in Coquille
J C LaFrance and his wife were arrested in Coquille by a detective from a Portland life insurance company. He allegedly disappeared after taking out 15000 dollars life insurance. A body recovered from the Clackamas river near Estacado was identified by Mrs LaFrance as her husband. she collected the policy and later vanished.

Assistant Attorney General Van Winkle issued an opinion Monday clarifying that county funds deposited with banks under the forthcoming law, effective June 3, will bear 2 percent interest. The confusion stemmed from a 1 percent figure shown on the bond form. the body of the law governs.

Railroad to be Improved Between Myrtle Point and Marshfield
Information from the Enterprise indicates major work on the Myrtle Point Marshfield line this summer. The roadbed will be reballasted and bridges and trestles repaired and strengthened. Land Contests Heard By U S Commissioner In Oregon
United States Commissioner EB A Dodge heard two land contest cases this week. The first involved Ernest W Livermore who proved up a homestead in township 29 range 13 W and section details. The government contends non residence. The second case concerns James W Barnett claimant of parts of section 8 and 2 in township 20 range 12 W, alleged non residence and coal value over agricultural value. Barnett, an elder of the German Baptist church, has resided in Marion Ohio but defends title. Leonard Underwood Portland special agent represents the government.
