Boiler explosion kills mill engineer at Coquille

In Coquille the Coquille Mill and Mercantile Co explosion killed engineer F. F. McCalley and injured his wife and child. Night watchman Earle Steel was shaken. property damage near ten thousand dollars. windows shattered citywide. the mill was running to fulfill a contracted order by Aasen Brothers.

New Railroad Company Formed in Coos Bay Region

The Coos Bay Traction Company, a Salem founded corporation, is viewed as successor to the Rapid Transit firm with capitalization of one million dollars. Incorporators include Geo M Perine Geo FE Averill W B Campbell A T Harding and W P Evans. Plans to be announced soon and leaders from Somers Robinson Averill Evans engaged on company business. An electric line to Roseburg with transcontinental connections may result.

Saints Reunion Brims With Interest in New Church

The Latter Day Saints reunion in this city continues through the week with large evening attendance in the new church. Elders Keeler and Sheehy join several ministers for a schedule of sermons and a Sunday dedication at 11 o'clock, with baptismal rites conducted Sunday afternoon at the Coquille. Also noted is the July 20 debut of the first all steel O and N train from Seattle to Portland, touted as modern and safe, setting a new standard in northwestern railroading.

Laird Exhibits Five Generations In Photo Display

J L Laird showed two photographs to friends last week one featuring Gertrude Laird child of Mrs and Mrs Binger Laird with six grandmothers all from Coquille valley the other including Gertrude and her grandmothers plus her parents and living grandfather The group spans five generations on the paternal side and four on the maternal side highlighting Coos county pioneers long tied to the county staging business.

Farmers union and Grange picnic at Arago set

The annual picnic and roll call of the Farmers union and Grange will be held at Arago in a week. Speeches by Frank Burkholder Mr. McDonald P S Robison Louis Strong C R Barrow and Geo E Peoples are planned. A sports program includes horse and foot races baseball and more with free coffee milk cheese and pickles for a basket dinner. The event runs from morning until a ball in the evening and no intoxicants are allowed on the grounds.

Steel Bridge Construction Planned at South Fork

E G Perham, contractor, outlines plans for a steel and cedar bridge across the South Fork below the Hermann homestead. A crew of five or six experienced men will arrive from Roseburg next week to start building, with additional helpers. Steel and cedar lumber are on the ground, A L Buell handling hauling. The bridge will rest on substantial piers and be the county’s first steel bridge, a durable structure.
