Tragic wreck of the Czarina off Coos Bay yields uncertain toll

Reported as a maritime disaster near the Coos Bay bar, the steamer Czarina carried coal cement and lumber from Johnson's mill. Initial tallies ranged from 38 aboard with 82 dead to 23 aboard with only one survivor, while rescue efforts faced criticism over life-saving practices and bar conditions.

Wrecked Sari Buena Vent ura Off Rogue River

The lumber schooner Sari Buena Ventura from Eureka Galif bound for Mexico was driven 100 miles off course in a severe storm and wrecked off Gold Beach last Saturday. The crew including the captain's wife and child were rescued by the Str Fairhaven and taken to San Francisco after abandoning ship in a lifeboat. The ship, once a fast coastal racer, began sinking after cargo shifted on Wednesday leaving the crew at pumps and the mate with three ribs broken.
