Large crowds gathered in Powers Oregon for the Moose Hall dedication and picnic. Visitors from Coquille North Bend Marshfield and across Coos County joined local members for speeches court mock trials and a grand outdoor feed with coffee and lemonade.

Salem Ore Aug 24 Attorney General Brown ruled that bonds issued under the 1913 county road bonding act must be sold at par He advised Tillamook county to seek court approval of its $412000 bond issue and questioned the sufficiency of the election petition He noted disputes over deductions for attorney fees and the bond term timing may affect legality of the sale

The Myrtle Point Auxiliary of the Red Cross Society held meetings at City Hall to establish for Red Cross work. It will have permanent headquarters on the Bank of Myrtle Point building’s second floor. The first task is knitting sets for soldiers. experienced knitters to teach others. Regular weekly meetings will be Mondays from 1 to 5 PM.

Oregon to teach food conservation at fairs and institutes

Corvallis August 27 special courses in food conservation are nearly ready for Oregon county fairs and teachers institutes. The plan, coordinated by the food administration department and Oregon Agricultural College, involves instructors from the college and graduates teaching high schools. Miss Ava B. Milam has already delivered lessons to Clackamas County teachers.

Obituary of Grandma Hayes of Powers Oregon

Grandma Hayes born January 5 1838 in Johnson County Tennessee died August 27 1917 near Powers at age 79. She married John Hayes November 26 1854 and lived in North Carolina before moving to Oregon with family in 1872. Surviving children numbered ten with thirty six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Brethren with interment at Norway cemetery.

Car Crash Leaves Calvin Mace Injured In Depression

Calvin Mace, employed on the Cutler ranch, rode with W C Cutler on a county road between the city and North Fork bridge. The car left the road and rolled down an embankment near the Wilburger residence. Mace suffered a dislocated hip and broken thigh, while Cutler escaped with bruises. The accident occurred near dusk as they drove close to the road edge.

Longtime Myrtle Point Leader John R Benson Dies at 69

John R Benson born November 21 1847 in Port Rowan Canada died August 25 1917 at Myrtle Point Oregon aged 69 years 9 months and four days. He served as city councilman mayor and fire department president and opened the Bank of Myrtle Point in 1901. He married Carrie Vaughan in 1869 and leaves one child Mabel Anita Roberts and adopted Pearl May Benson. Interment followed at Myrtle Point cemetery after a family funeral Monday afternoon.
