Plans mature for the Cool Curry County Fair at Myrtle Point on the 12th to 15th next month. The piece highlights expected heavy attendance, strong exhibits, and broad community participation across farming and homemaking, with a focus on recreation and education for residents of Coos and Curry counties.
Salem Aug 21 Labor Commissioner Hoff reports a mid season survey shows Western Oregon crop yields down 20 to 25 percent and Eastern Oregon 30 to 50 percent due to drought. Grain harvest is proceeding with 20 to 30 percent labor shortage, but fruit crops and hops appear saveable with labor adjustments. prune, apple, peach and pear yields remain to be decided.
Salem reports from County superintendents show pupil attendance in most counties above 95 percent. Assistant Superintendent Welles credits parent teacher and district efforts to meet the states 92 percent standard. Oregon ranks highest for rural school attendance among states per the U.S. Bureau of Education.
Good Swimmer Mabel McGee, 16, of Lakeside, claimed the long distance crown by swimming from Rocky Point on Ten Mile Lakes to the landing, a distance of one and one fourth miles in 40 minutes. Mrs. Archie Philip and others followed in a boat, keeping strict time. Last year McGee saved four people from a deep hole.
Dr. F. M. White of Klamath Falls, an eye ear and throat specialist, has nearly arranged a move to Marshfield Dr. He will occupy the offices vacated by Dr. E. L. Straw who plans to join the U S Army Medical Crops. Dr. White's wife is former Miss Dement of Myrtle Point.
Eleven cars of stock were shipped last Saturday but this run carried nine cars less than the earlier seventeen car shipment. W. T. Dement sent five cars, R. L. Dement three and C. C. Carter three. Dement Carter Summerlin Ray Dement and John Warner accompanied the shipment to Portland.
Chas. Pullen of Bandon spent the latter part of last week at his sister Mrs. Dan Barklow's home. He was en route home from an extended trip through California.
New York August 16. An educational campaign to boost the popularity of the American apple will be launched by the International Apple Shippers association. The plan followed the twenty third annual convention in New York and includes cooperation with Herbert Hoover. England’s embargo on apples remains in effect, limiting the foreign market for American growers.
At the mid month council meeting bids were opened for four street improvement projects including First Street Fourth Street Spruce Street and an Alley in Block 7. Dean & Brown of North Bend submitted the highest total bid but were awarded the contract after engineer Tenney advised it was in the best interest of the city and property owners. Dean & Brown plan to begin work early next week.
Washington reports President Wilson urges soldiers to read the Bible through. He wrote an inscription on Bibles donated by the Scripture Gift Mission of Philadelphia, calling the Bible the word of life and urging long passages to reach the heart and duty.
Douglas County will receive a $400000 grant to fund road construction projects. The funds target improving critical routes and easing traffic congestion within the county. Local officials expect faster commute times and enhanced corridor safety.
Washington reports that mail for American soldiers in France will not be forwarded unless it shows the soldier's company and regiment or the exact unit. Postmaster General Burleson ordered return to senders of any mail lacking that information. Officials say addresses like Somewhere in France Care of the American Expeditionary Forces hinder mail delivery.
Powers Lodge No 1225 Loyal Order of Moose plans a Sunday dedication for its lodge hall in Powers. Delegations from county Moose lodges will attend. the ceremony is private for members, followed by hall inspection. A special excursion train by Southern Pacific will transport visitors at one fare round trip.
The Church of the Brethren annual conference and district meeting for the Oregon District adjourned Tuesday evening after Communion. Delegates and public programs drew strong attendance, with some delegates returning home while others with Myrtle Point ties stayed longer.
W J Hill longtime general storekeeper and superintendent for Smith Powers Logging Company at Powers died suddenly Tuesday forenoon from heart trouble after a brief illness. He had been with the company since operations began on the coast.
On a very dry day near Norway a brush fire spread along the railway right of way. L. P. Trigg feared locomotive sparks would ignite his nearby barn used as a machine shed. A hired man warned the family as fires reached the house, then the roof fire in the barn was checked before spreading further.
Neighbors rushed to fight a blaze that consumed a large dairy barn at a Cement place near Myrtle Point and Norway. Water was hauled in milk cans as winds shifted, but the barn could not be saved though cabins and outbuildings were kept intact.
Mr L P Trigg thanks friends who assisted in keeping the fire under control and in the response efforts.
A blaze in a vacant lot near the Dement stock ranch south of town endangered buildings including the recently built stock barn. The fire touched off a small tool house before help arrived as Mrs. Claire Dement rode four miles to summon aid while Mr. and Mrs. Dement remained on the property.
Salem Oregon August 18 Superintendent of Public Instruction Churchill left for Washington D C to meet Dr Claxton secretary of the federal board of vocational education. Oregon faces a 15000 dollar allotment under the Smith Hughes act with possible matching funds from Oregon Agricultural College. Conference includes state superintendents from other western states.
The Southern Oregon district Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints holds its annual reunion at Dixon Grove starting Friday August 24 and running through Sunday September 2. Day sessions cover general church activities and evenings feature preaching. Elders J W Rushton Rudolph Etzenhouser M H Cook and Roy F Slye are listed among speakers. all are invited.

Washington announces changes in draft mobilization schedules. The second increment now mobilizes on September 19 instead of September 15, and the third increment moves to October 8 from September 30. The first increment remains September 5.
