Transatlantic venture named Wenan's Klondike syndicate formed in New York. Reports from the ocean recount a calm crossing on the Haer 8t. Panthae earlier, while a spate of distant notices describe mining finds in Oregon, arkansas pearls, and Yukon field administration plans.
A fierce Aug. 16 storm in Arizona and Sonora caused extensive damage. Nogales and Guaymas suffered washed out rail lines and bridges, with many Mexican families homeless and a mayor’s residence destroyed. A train bound for Guaymas was halted by authorities amid flooding.
Pittsburg August 16 The United Mineworkers of America led by Patrick Dolan face a county court injunction aimed at stopping marches encampments and work stoppages at Plum Creek Turtle Creek and Sandy Creek mines The New York and Cleveland Gas and Coal Company seeks to protect 1200 workers and 1 000 000 capital The judge set August 18 for a hearing Dolan vows to ignore any enforcement and to continue operations despite all judges in Allegheny County warning will only increase jail capacity by the company if forces are used to stop the miners
Pittsburg Aug 16 Miners at Cannonsburg vow to push the injunction fight by daily marches and meetings near Mc Govern and Cannonsburg mines despite Judge Mollwayne’s ban. Patrick Dolan says arrests will continue until opinion shifts toward a new injunction, with unions backing the effort after a Columbo meeting led by Samuel Gompers. Reports say Bell Lewis & Yates miners struck Reynoldsville, the Scarpe idle, about 8 000 men employed, Turtle Creek march underway. Akron cereal company offers two tons of corn meal, while Astoria fishermen ship 100 cases of salmon east for miners.
Injunctions halt moorhen by the New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Company, but a deputy is cut and miners threaten violence. Captain Bellingham and Sheriff Lowrey coolly restore order as officers retreat to camp. Additional deputies dispatched to Plum Creek.
Havana dispatch reports the Aguacate battle near the Matanzas line resulted in about 200 Spanish dead and light insurgent losses. Weyler advanced toward Havana while insurgents under Cantillo and Rodrigues pressed from the south. Reports say Weyler reached Guanabacoa with 4000 troops and repelled a rebel move, as gunboats and trains faced sporadic attacks.
Washington reports emphasize Hawaii as a key strategic Pacific base from both military and commercial viewpoints. Director Smith notes Hawaii’s mid-ocean location would serve as a vital coaling and supply depot, enabling faster operations for ships between America and Asia and extending U S strategic reach with a fortified Honolulu harbor.
Chicago reports Captain John Windrow of San Francisco disputes the claim that Professor Andree's balloon sank in the sea. Windrow, visiting his brother in Chicago, cites wind patterns toward Siberia and foresees months before news. He dismisses the sea sinking story as improbable.
Mrs George Ruthman of Beaver Falls heard a loud noise on her back porch and found her two sons, seven and one, with the infant lodged by a bicycle pump tube. The elder boy had pumped air into the baby's mouth causing the stomach to infl ate. the mother pulled the tube free and the air escaped. The baby regained consciousness afterward.
In New York At 16 twenty five hundred workers in tobacco cigarette making lose jobs because the internal revenue department in Washington failed to supply deputy collectors in the city with the new one dollar revenue stamps under the tariff. President McKinley will attend the Ohio fair in Columbus opening August 31. A mine blast at the Little Annie mine near Jenes, Del Norte County, killed four men including Foreman Robert Jones. details on the other victims scarce.
The city council of Marshfield weighs a business tax to raise funds for street maintenance amid reports of tax plans and civic costs. Harvests and wheat yields improve in Lincoln and Bharman counties as farmers report strong hay crops and early grain. A proposed Astoria harbor improvement plan seeks 63 000 to study depth and width, likely moving to the next five year federal harbor bill.
