New Registrants Told They May Enter Navy or Marines

June 1918 registrants sought release to join naval service but initial war department guidance restricted entries to the army. Washington then granted local boards permission to release men to the navy or marines if they show immediate intent to enlist, with releases contingent on action.

Tobacco substitute for Germans very injurious

Amsterdam June 13. Deputy Mueller of Meiningen told the reichstag that the tobacco substitute supplied to the German army proved more injurious than enemy gas attacks. Deputies criticized the army administration for supplying the substitute which is made of beech leaves. General von Oven said the army adopted the substitute reluctantly after tests but halted further deliveries after it harmed soldiers' health.

The Rev. Dr. Reginald Crowe from Vermont serves as a dual sky pilot in England, flying between airdromes to greet American aviators, deliver sermons, and organize baseball teams while distributing Y M C A aid materials. Unpaid June telephone bills for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. are overdue, with service to be cut at 6:00 p.m. on the 18th.

Arkansas Labor Sent to Harvest Oklahoma Grain

More than 200 men from Fort Smith have been sent to wheat harvest fields in Oklahoma. Federal officials cite higher demand than supply from federal and state bureaus. Farmers offer 50 to 60 cents an hour plus board. 40 men sent by the federal state bureau, with 40 more to Paden, Oklahoma. Many workers are from Fort Smith glass plants closed by fuel administration orders. Notice requests payment of 1917 taxes due June 15, 1918.
