Northwestern Oregon and Southern Washington burn with unparalleled fury destroying towns and timberlands. At least 100 are dead with many missing as flames surge along the Lewis River and Foot Mountain areas. Smoke blankets California as scenes of rescue and peril unfold across multiple communities.
In Kalama Washington Sept 15 a violent forest fire on the Lewis river region has caused many deaths and widespread destruction. D L Wallace his wife and two children perished in a camping area. A 12 year old Hanley boy and several others are dead. Multiple families lost homes and belongings as five logging camps burned out. Fire spread toward the Kalama river with extensive timber loss and unreported casualties likely.
Democrats of Des Moines county met in Burlington on Saturday and named W. W. Dodge for attorney, O. P. Bell for auditor, James Williams for sheriff, C. E. Demling for clerk, James Hawkins for recorder, and J. C. Hanna for supervisor in the party ticket.
Jefferson Iowa September 15 At the Des Moines conference of the M E church the vote to hold the next conference in Indianola carried by ten as Emory Miller urged Indianola and Dr Storms invited Des Moines First Methodist.
Keokuk county supervisors plan a new monument near Sigourney to mark Chief Keokuk bones claimed genuine, while Keokuk city seeks proofs to defend the Rand park monument. Auditor Wheeler of Keokuk county has notified the city of Keokuk of the county action.
London Sept 15 John W Gates has been refused a suite at Claridge's Hotel in Brook Street. The manager says Gates' profane language and reckless spitting made him unwelcome, even with vast wealth. He instead stayed at the Carlton in Pall Mall. The manager notes the objection came mainly from American guests.
A morning blaze in Muscatine destroyed John H Kaiser's box factory and damaged the adjacent planing mill and saw mill. About 100 workers were affected as flames spread from the hogger shed, with extensive damage to lumber and accessories. Firefighters, aided by Muscatine Sash and Door and Rescue crews, fought for over an hour to contain the blaze and protect surrounding yards and cars.
Waterloo reports Mayor Martin ordered Traer watchers to locate a farmer's rubber boots containing $1,200 cash hidden by a Bohemian farmer. The wife sold the boots to a traveling junk dealer. the farmer seeks the boots and the dealer, as the husband fears losing the money. The junk man's whereabouts are unknown.
More than one hundred visiting Odd Fellows from across the country arrive in Des Moines for Sovereign Grand Lodge and affiliated meetings. About 50 ladies join them, with many attending the Rebekah Assembly sessions. By noon today all 200 lodge representatives will be in the city for related festivities.

In Wilkesbarre a mob of strikers attacked two non union men at Lackawanna station. John Gigano was shot in the head and badly beaten, taken to hospital in critical condition while his companion escaped. In Scranton three Italian street laborers were mistaken for non union miners and assaulted near Throop. one man reportedly killed and two others seriously injured.
A Saturday conference of prominent New York state Republicans endorsed President Roosevelt and his administration for 1904. Senator Platt announced the unanimous decision after noting prior opposition was minority.
Oyster Bay Nassau county residents are to be welcomed by Roosevelt at Sagamore Hill this evening. People arrive by hay wagons cars trains bicycles and on foot. A three mile drive from the city is festooned with bunting and flags. Each visitor will receive a lemonade glass as a souvenir.
Hart, the U S minister to Colombia, cables that the interior rebellion is quelled, freeing government troops for service at the Isthmus to suppress an insurrection.

Otto Schmidt of Letts traveled home this morning on the 7 58 train after spending Sunday in Rock Island visiting friends and taking in the sights.
Lynn Mass September 15 Justice Horace Gray of the United States Supreme Court died at Nahant today of paralysis. He joined the court in 1882 after being born in 1828. Gray died early this morning at his summer cottage after a long illness. The widow refused to release details of his last hours.
In Shanandoah Pennsylvania on September 15, the nineteenth week of the coal strike began with no change in stance. The Reading company plans to post a notice offering reinstatement to all old workers who return within ten days.
Chicago dispatch notes a forecast of fair and warmer conditions for tonight and Tuesday. Indications point to a gradual rise in temperatures across Iowa with clearing skies and no precipitation expected.
