MCC Enrollment Surpasses 1000 as Fall Term Opens

Muscatine Community College reports over 1,000 full and part time students this fall, with registrations still being accepted. Registrar David Porter says enrollment could reach about 1,030, influenced by veterans programs and job security fears. Off campus programs in Davenport and other sites bolster totals across the Eastern Iowa Community College District, including Clinton with 850 and Scott with 617 students.

History talk on Muscatine Jewish community opens series

Mrs. Bess Pearlman will open the 1975 76 history study series of the Muscatine Area Heritage Association. The 7 p.m. program Thursday at Musser Public Library covers the history of 100 years of Judaism in Muscatine and the local synagogue. Frank and Frank Drucker assist in tracing Jewish families. A question and answer period follows. Free public programs run the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the library.

Stamp club elects officers

The Muscatine Stamp Collectors Club held an election Saturday naming Sarah Stanley president Tim Dean vice president Lee Anne Rada treasurer Susan Lowmer secretary and reporter and Dominique Bahringer historian. A stamp quiz is planned for Sept 20 at 3 p.m. to prep for the United Nations Stamp contest. Birthday notes mention four members with birthdays near Sept 6 as co hosts of a Mason Koffee Club breakfast. hosts were Robert Stohr Harry Davis Jesse Wagner and Kenneth Hathaway with 37 attendees.

Robbery nets man fish and cash near Dougherty Bridge

Wilton man Kenneth Stepanek was robbed early today while fishing near Dougherty Bridge. A man offered to buy his catch, pulled a knife, took his fishing basket and dumped the fish. The thief then grabbed $25 in cash and fled with bullheads. Deputies investigate.

Retiring Presidents Hand Over Iowa Daily Press Association

At the annual Iowa Daily Press Association banquet in Des Moines on Saturday night retiring president Bill Fahy publisher of the Muscatine Journal completed his year in office and passed leadership to Dave Elder publisher of the Washington Journal.

Classified ads win 5 awards at IDPA contest

Five Muscatine Journal classified ads earned awards at the Iowa Daily Press Association contest in Des Moines. Second place went to Action Realtors ads in the large series category, Muscatine Journal Valentine baby photos ad in single black and white, and Krieger Motors ad in single black and white. Third place to Alpine Realtors in single black and white real estate and Ziegenhorn Realtors in small series. The Journal’s women’s pages won third in the under 12,000 circulation class. Publisher Bill Fahy presented general excellence awards to the Ames Tribune and Mason City Globe Gazette, and a community service award to the Mount Pleasant News at a Saturday banquet. Fahy has led IDPA, comprising 39 Iowa dailies, this past year. Attendees included Fahy and staff from advertising and news departments.

Primary election Oct 21 in 3 way mayor race

Nomination papers for two candidates to seek city office were filed with the Muscatine city clerk. Evelyn Schauland and Alex Bender turned in petitions at the auditor’s office. The three candidates for mayor are Schauland, William Angell, and John J. Henderson. The run off is set for Oct 21. Several aldermen filed for re election or announced intentions to run.

Break in and two thefts hit Muscatine weekend

Muscatine city police logged a break in and two thefts over the weekend. Larry Uleh’s stereo tape deck and record changer were stolen Sunday from 1221 Lincoln Blvd after a basement window screen was removed. Evelyn Norris reported an antique table stolen from her basement and an oak plant stand worth 75 dollars. Tom Petersen’s lawn mower, a power mower valued at 100 dollars, was taken from 1219 Lincoln Blvd. Accidents included a Sunday 8:42 p.m. crash at Ninth and Lombard with two Bancroft men injured. a Saturday 11:54 p.m. collision on Grandview Avenue with Jackie Harris hospitalized and later released. and a Saturday 4:55 p.m. incident involving Evelyn Curry and a train at Benham Avenue.

Firemen rescue 17 from ride at county picnic

Muscatine firefighters freed about 17 people from a ferris wheel when a cable broke at the Grain Processing Co Kent Feeds annual picnic in Flaming Prairie Park Louisa County The operator Port City Rides and Daryl Snyder aged 7 of 211 Liberty St. received bumps and bruises from the incident.
