A jury returns a guilty verdict of murder in the first degree against Noble in the case heard at the district court. The trial concluded with the jurors finding the defendant responsible for the fatal act, leading to potential sentencing proceedings.
The jury convicted Ira Noble of first degree murder in the death of Tom Morgan. The penalty is life imprisonment with hard labor. The judge will consider a motion for a new trial next week before Noble is sent to the state penitentiary. Noble sits under guard as his appeal may follow.
Nashville report says a gas explosion at Fraterville and Thistle mines in Coal Creek district killed at least 150 workers. Only John Morgan survived the blast, blown from mine mouth as smoke and flames poured from entrances. Mines are burning. rescue efforts underway.

Des Moines reports Attorney General Mullen received letters confirming Iowa will get about 500000 from the federal government for civil war troop equipment costs. Secretary Shaw and Speaker Henderson notified that the claim will be included in the appropriation bill, likely allowing funds to reach the state treasury before Congress adjourns around August 1.

Hamilton Pa May 19. Hope rises that 302000 bituminous miners may join 147000 anthracite workers in a short struggle. President Mitchell says he is more than satisfied with the situation. Foreign miners continue moving east and west seeking work or return to homeland as thousands of clerks and other workers are suspended by rail and coal companies.
