A historic accession sees a new monarch ascend the throne of Spain as crowds fill streets. Officials declare national celebrations and mark the event as a milestone for the monarchy and the country.
King Alfonso XIII was proclaimed sovereign in a ten minute ceremony in the Madrid Chamber of Deputies. Thousands watched as the procession passed, with Gen Weyler in charge of troops and grand pageantry surrounding the golden coach.

Muscatine's leading photographer Mr Townsend travels to Des Moines for the Photographer's Association of Iowa meeting. As vice president he will likely skip prizes this year, instead offering a complimentary exhibit. His prior work won the interstate exhibit prize and a grand genry prize at the Illinois convention. He aims to bring back new ideas to serve patrons with the latest in artistic photography. Competent help remains at his studio to handle work with careful attention.

Montezuma Iowa May 17. The 1902 class will graduate June 6 with a principal address likely by Dan Bradley of Iowa College. The board re elected the teaching staff except T C McIntire named assistant principal. Public improvements include sewer work on Third street toward the Palace Hotel and new crossings with sidewalk repairs.
The Y M C A building fund stands at 33684.16 with a city wide canvass underway. A jubilee service is planned at the Congregational church and pastors will present the work May 25. A four day drive starting May 27, led by about 50 local business and professional people, seeks gifts of any size to complete the fund.
The closing argument in the Kid Noble murder case was delivered by J. R. Hanley this afternoon following E. M. Warner. Hanley attacked the defense’s presentation as “chaff,” asserted Noble shot Tom Morgan in cold blood, and criticized the defense and jurors while contrasting Warner’s rhetoric with the facts of the case.
Columbus Junction Iowa May 17 Special Postmaster H M Letts has received papers for another four year term as postmaster amid local interest in the appointment.
A massive blaze at Armour & Co. lardhouse in Chicago damaged the Union Stock Yards complex. The loss nears one million dollars and is insured. A hog runway collapsed during the fire, injuring over twenty five people among two thousand spectators. several doctors warned some victims may die.
Hazleton May 17 The leaders of the coal strike seek 300 000 bituminous miners to join the anthracite walkout a move that would break their annual contract. President Mitchell declines discussion of a soft coal strike as tensions stay quiet ahead of a possible national convention likely in Indianapolis.
Mason City Iowa May 17 Special. The Fourth district committee meets at Charles City Monday and a convention is rumored to be set for June. The move aims to renominate Congressman Haugen if the convention is held.
The Baptist mid year rally in Washington Iowa ended Friday night. Speakers included Miss McLaurin of Boston and Rev. W L Ferguson a returned missionary.
In a St Lucia dispatch dated May 17, the American naval tug Potomac reports from St Vincent that the island was quiet on release with light ash fall but people remain frightened as fears of a fresh eruption intensify.
Lightning struck Davenport Iowa’s government draw bridge this morning causing damage that left the structure inoperable for about an hour. The incident occurred May 17 and disrupted municipal operations in Davenport.
Mrs. Amanda Moore of Buffalo died after six hours of agony from clothes catching fire while burning rubbish. She was 32, survived by husband Frank and four children, plus three sisters and two brothers. Funeral at the Buffalo church Sunday at 2 PM with Rev. C. E. Fitzsimmons officiating. Interment in Blue Grass cemetery. relatives traveled from Muscatine and Blue Grass for the service.
