Button makers credit Muscatine line freight cuts profits
A Muscatine button industry source credits the Muscatine North and South railroad for lowering freight rates on shells from Arkansas, enabling factories to stay open. The Rock Island line had proposed $8 per ton freight, risking closures, but the reduction kept production alive with the road's agents cited as essential.
Muscatine Rail Rate Cuts Benefit Shell Trade
Agents of the Muscatine North and South railroad arranged a road rate of four dollars a ton for shells from the White river district to Muscatine via a chain of lines. The rate boosted local employment and aided the button factory sector by reducing raw material freight costs. Rock Island later matched four dollars, stabilizing shipping costs for the Muscatine area.
