Chicago on May 3 reports a price surge unseen in packing house history as cattle raisers are advised not to ship to Chicago and many refuse price cuts of 15 to 30 cents. Beef trust members boycott the paying pens while few cattle stay unsold in stock yards.
General Davis reports fighting with Moros began this morning as American outposts were fired on after a messenger with an ultimatum failed to return. The first fort was shelled and captured. it housed about 360 defenders. Fort Pando Padro was then attacked as heavy fire continued. Lieutenant Henry Wagner of the Fourteenth Infantry was seriously wounded along with two other officers and twenty enlisted men.
A Louisa County Republican meeting Friday chose ten delegates to the first district congressional convention. The event endorsed Congressman Hedge’s renomination. Delegates: C. A. Carpenter Columbus Junction, J. W. Garner Columbus City, D. McKinley Cairo, E. L. McClurkin Morning Sun, R. G. Hawkins Wapello, J. Q. Beatty Fruitland, J. T. Porter Wyman, H. N. Matthews Oakville, P. Edwin K. Brown of the University of Iowa won first honors at the Northern Oratorical league contest in Chicago. The prize was $0. Thomas D. Schall of the University of Minnesota took second prize, $50. Bertram G. Nelson of the University of Chicago earned the third honor. Other orators included George W. Maxey of the University of Michigan.
The Iowa City Republican recalls the 1842 scene when the steamer Rock River appeared on the Iowa River drawing crowds and red skinned watchers. The vessel brought freight from Burlington and Muscatine and proved navigable briefly before the river fell back to depths that ended steamship visits.

Muscatine County teachers gathered this afternoon at the city high school with strong representation from surrounding towns and country schools. Prof. L G Focht presided with Miss Pearl Penney as secretary. Miss Stella Creitz led a paper on what a child should gain in year one, followed by discussions from Laura B Stinson and Bessie Murphy.

Ultrie King of Chicago, creditors' attorney, filed a suit in Galesburg to recover 30000 from James O. Baird of Williamsfield. It is the first in a series of test suits. Philips claims Baird failed to meet an obligation to the Chicago board of trade in rye speculation, partly causing Phillips' failure. Baird calls it a gambling transaction.

Lifelong Louisa County figure Thompson M Parsons died at his Toolsboro home on May 2 1902 aged 83 A Virginian by birth he was an abolitionist and longtime Louisa county supervisor influential in local politics He married Mary Hale in 1817 and leaves six children with wide family connections across Iowa Funeral planned for May 4 in Parsons cemetery.
Amos J Cummins died shortly after 10 o clock last night at the Church Home and Infirmary in Baltimore after a period of illness from pneumonia following an operation. His wife and cousin Charles H Cummins were at his bedside.
