Telluride Colorado March 3 The number of lives lost in four avalanches on Smuggler Mountain is estimated at twenty to twenty five. Fourteen men are confirmed dead with unknown others buried under snow and twelve severely injured in hospitals. Several more hurt are at home. Recovery is expected to be limited until snow melts.
The Supreme Court in Washington today held city ordinances reducing Detroit street railway fares from five to three cents invalid. It said the 5 cent fare was a contract and could not be abrogated without the railway company's consent.

Mrs James Essington a 44 year old Carlyle Illinois woman died after cleaning a shawl with gasoline. The fire spread to a pan of gasoline and then to her clothing. Dr Max Broening, the physician on duty, initially refused to help and only aided after locals threatened to drag him to the bedside. Prosecutors plan to pursue action.
In St Joseph Michigan on March 3 Mrs. Ludwig raced a carriage to reach a doctor after her husband Henry Ludwig suffered heart pains. He died half a mile from town as the horse collapsed at Dr Beers residence.
Marconi reported from the Philadelphia voyage that he could communicate with his Cornwall Poldhu station across the Atlantic without difficulty up to 2099 miles. Captain Mills of the Marsden verified messages by signing each received transmission. Fifteen hundred miles of sea messages were recorded with stamps indicating a 2000 mile distance.
