Fifer Ends Life After Nervous Strain at Muscatine
Charles Monroe Fifer 51 of 1005 Iowa avenue superintendent of mails at the Muscatine post office for 20 years was found dead before dawn in the dell behind St Mathias church on West Eighth street. A revolver with four empty shells and one loaded chamber was near the body. Coroner Dr. W S Norton ruled death by own action. no inquest. Fifer had recently suffered a nervous attack and heat stroke. He had attended a pageant with his wife Tuesday night and disappeared before it ended.

Anamosa reformatory warden C H Ireland died Tuesday after a five day illness from heart leakage. He was 52 and had served as warden since January 1 1932 appointed by Gov Dan Turner. Surviving are his widow and three children. Deputy Warden Brincombe to head the institution temporarily. Irish was a Spanish-American War veteran and longtime Jones county Republican official.

Showers that began just before noon eased the two week heat spell. At 7 am the official temperature was 82 degrees, two degrees below Tuesday.
