Break in at GST Corp office nets small theft
Police investigate a break in at GST Corp on East Second Street. Entry was gained by pulling a wire screen from an alley window. A money box was pried open and about $1.50 in change stolen. Office ransacked. other losses not yet determined.

Citizens Committee urges Muscatine park development
A resolution adopted by the Mayor's Citizens Advisory Committee urges the Muscatine County Conservation Board to continue developing the 74 acre Miller Park area between Chicken Creek and the Cedar River for public use. The site cost $8,500 last year with further work spent clearing land and trimming trees for picnicking camping and fishing. The committee also discussed youth employment housing public safety and annexation with plans for a housing meeting on July 21 and a study of cooperative police and fire department concepts.

Breakfast honors Miss Muscatine during closing reign
Gatherings Thursday evening and this morning for Karen Pearlman marked the closing week of her reign as Miss Muscatine. A breakfast at Hotel Muscatine honored Pearlman and her parents with congratulations from Mayor E S Kelly Burns and a merit certificate for representing Muscatine at the Miss Iowa Pageant. LH Petersen praised her impression on the chamber, and she was a guest at the chamber’s 25th anniversary reception. Pearlman thanked the attendees and said the Miss Iowa head hostess invited her back next year to assist with the 1970 pageant. She received a gift from Kim Meltzer, and will help select her successor on July 5.

Cyclist Curtis Injured in Highway Collision Near Ford Avenue
Donald Wesley Curtis a 16 year old resident of 193 Miles avenue sustained cuts and bruises Thursday afternoon when his southbound motorcycle on highway 61 near Ford avenue went off the road and struck a fence. He was taken to Muscatine General Hospital. Police report says he lost control while trying to check a cycle behind him veering into a left lane where a car was traveling beside. In swerving back right he left the highway.

Muscatine Muskie players save drowning youth in slough
Two Muscatine High School baseball players Doug Randleman Jr and Mike Hartsock rescued 15 year old Steve Van Dolah from the Muscatine slough behind Bruner Field during batting practice. Van Dolah was weak while attempting to swim across the water. He was brought to shore and taken to the hospital where he was released after examination.

Muscatine Civil Defense director Earl Jones announced updates to the city siren signals to align with state systems. A steady blast signals a definite tornado threat requiring immediate cover, while a wavering signal indicates the tornado is sighted and touching down. A tornado watch will no longer trigger a siren, and police and sheriff departments are alerted to watches. A Muscatine line connects to the state warning network, and communities are notified to respond as threats escalate. A 13-year-old Annawan boy, Michael Lean Vanhamme, was released to his parents.

Damage at Lantern Lodge Leads to Fines
A defacing a building charge was filed in Justice Bay Pace court over an incident at Lantern Lodge near the Cedar river on county road to West Liberty on June 44. Isaac Norris and Douglas Craig Stone have appeared and been fined 25 dollars plus costs. Charles J. Eckhardt is to appear to face the same charge.
