Beach honored for 27 years of service with West Liberty fire department
West Liberty Iowa honors Chester Beach for 27 years of faithful volunteer fire service. He attended all fire calls and almost all monthly meetings, responded to 27 rural and nearly 27 city calls, served as fire chief from 1935 to 1963, and held a seat on the board of trustees.

Phone installer finishes course at Des Moines training school
Martin Shook, an installer for Northwestern Bell since 1966, completed a three week course on multi button telephones at the company training school in Des Moines. Beach, a long time West Liberty firefighter, recalls major fires and praises modern equipment and radio systems improving response.

Gustafson Receives 31-Year Fire Department Honor
A. R. Bob Gustafson of Wapello is honored with a long service firemen's award marking 31 years with the Wapello Fire Department including nine years as chief. He helped organize the volunteer rescue unit, served as school district bus supervisor for 26 years, and donated a 1919 chain driven American Le France fire engine with his wife. He has attended numerous fire extension classes and district schools, and estimates responding to 40 to 2 fires yearly over the past three years. Loren J. Tompson is chief of the department.
