The Tagablitz notes autocratic tendencies and questions whether war should be declared, urging a vote by the German people and approval from the congress. Senate Hearing Extends Government Rule To Iron And Coal
Washington June 26 Ex tension of government control and price fixing of coal iron and steel and other raw materials during the war was considered today by the senate interstate commerce commission. Coal was the first subject taken up with Ohio and Pittsburgh operators as first witnesses. A speedy inquiry was planned by the committee with a view to proposing amendments to the food control bill for federal regulation of staple commodities. Bills by Senators Fornerona and Cumming to have the government fix prices of coal and railroad supplies were before the committee but investigation promised a much broader scope. The food control bill was taken up today by the senate agricultural and committee with many obstacles facing it chief among which were the drastic prohibition features of the measure as it passed the house. The committee hopes to present its draft to the senate tomorrow and modifications are expected to remove some objections to the measure. The main fight would revolve around the House provision to prohibit manufacture of intoxicants into any form.
