Muscatine residents bid farewell to Battery C as families and friends gather in tears and smiles. Soldiers receive patriotic tributes and farewells amid town pride, with songs and speeches honoring their service and safe return.
Large crowd gathered at Muscatine area depot as a special train carrying troops left Rock Island station shortly after 6 am. Families, friends, and women cried and cheered, while guardsmen maintained a steady front, amid sobs and brave smiles, capturing the nation’s mood at dawn.
Dow Molinos, In, was confirmed by Secretary Baker as the site of one of the 16 national army covi ronment wiles after receipt of the supplemental report from Major General Barry commanding the control department. The general stated that after personal examination of the ground he was entirely antidised with suitability for a military par POHOK.
Ten units of American Woodmen from New England states arrived in England to convert forests into lumber. They were fully equipped with machinery and lubricating oil and prepared to establish a saw mill and begin work. Only raw food for their cooks is needed.
Washington June 2. Proposals to ban all intoxicants entered war time policy debate as amendments to the food control bill were approved by the wartime trade committee. The plan would extend federal controls to alcohol, with the president allowed to permit limited manufacture of wine. Officials say President Wilson’s stance remains unclear though believed cautious, focusing on food production and wartime needs.
June 27 dispatches report the Russian provisional government warning against violence in Petrograd. Officials say a united popular front supports the government with workers and soldiers backing its reform program and condemn radical elements. London June 27 The British socialist section led by Henry Hyndman refused to salute the Russian council of workers and soldiers delegates and decline to attend the International socialist conference at Stockholm citing that German and Austrian socialists would attend and that Germany’s territorial gains and aggression discredit the conference and socialist aims.
In New York and Nevada 27 a number of secret service men were assigned to guard the courtroom at the trials of Alexander Borkman editor of The Blast and Emrmin Goldman. In the United States court, Roth were indicted for conspiracy to obstruct the operation of the selective draft law.
Washington June 27 The American Red Cross plans to establish dispensaries in allied ports as one of its first tasks with the big war fund now about 114 million dollars. Henry T Davison, chairman of the Red Cross war council, thanked the public for donations and pledged prudent, public-minded expenditure of the funds.
London June 7 reports from Norway say the German legation at Christiania protested German official seals on Aron Rautenfels baggage connected with a conspiracy to plunder ships. The seizure failed to yield his surrender despite Norway demanding it. No confirmation of Paris claims that Germany pressed Norway to expatriate the minister Michaella is noted. Admiral von Mintz, former minister to Mexico and China, has been cited.
Washington June 27 Russian mission will travel to New York July for a three days visit. The program mirrors those of the French English and Italian missions that have preceded them.
