The Muscatine Red Sox lost 2-1 at Rock Island Sunday, ending their 3-1 league start and leaving them tied for first with Bettendorf and Rock Island. A planned doubleheader was reduced to one game due to a ball park mixup. George Long's club heads to Bettendorf next. Ed Saw-
The Muscatine Horseshoe Club and Park Commission hosted the 8th annual open tournament at Kent-Stein Park. Class A winner was Glen Henton of Maquoketa. Class B Madela Blake of Letts. Classes C and D won by McLain and Norris respectively. Prizes for top two in each class. Muscatine defeated Rock Island 5 hits to 4 with Wright the winning pitcher.
Durant rallied for a three run seventh to beat Mt Vernon 7 to 4 in a high school baseball game. Steve Petersen earned the win with a one hit performance, while Rick Cooling and Jeff Vastine helped spark the comeback with timely hits.
Bruce Crampton of Australia shot 63 to win the $160,000 Ameri can Golf Classic in Akron Ohio. His seven under par total of 273 placed him ahead of Jack Nicklaus and made him the year's leading money winner with $204,200.
Cambridge Junction, Mich, David Pearson led with 22 laps to go and held on to win the National Association of Stock Car Racing Motor State 400 at Michigan International Speedway. In Connecticut, Sue Benning shot 69 to win the LPGA Heritage Village Open by four strokes.
Muscatine's Muskies drop to 12-13 after consecutive losses to Iowa City High, 12-0 and 1-1, and host Clinton tonight at Tom Bruner Field in a soph game preceding a busy week with North Scott and Iowa City West on the slate. Nine of IC’s 23 runs were unearned as Muskies managed only nine hits across the two games.
Mike Niffenegger of Katona won the 3 lap mid season championship race at the Mississippi Valley Speedway club circuit. Ken DeGood of Iowa City won the street stock feature. Saturday results list fast time, trophy dash, heats, and features with multiple drivers from West Liberty Des Moines Muscatine Davenport and other towns.
