25th reunion marks Muscatine class of 1950s return

At Muscatine High School on June 21 the 25th reunion of the 44MHS class drew 235 attendees including spouses. 119 girls and 34 boys graduated. eight members are deceased and many live out of town. Awards honored travel, athleticism, education, and family milestones while Norman Maxwell led planning.

Local Ikes attend Iowa convention in Burlington

The 46th annual Iowa Division Izaak Walton League convention met in Burlington for three days. Raymond C. Hubley Jr. warned that deeper Mississippi River navigation could turn the river into a single purpose resource. Delegates backed bills to ban further use of DDT and similar pesticides and urged closing the duck season until populations recover. Richard Ayres of Spirit Lake was elected president of the Town Division.

Legion Auxiliary names Muscatine woman to office

Mrs Eelen Wulf of Muscatine was elected senior vice president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary at the 48th annual state convention in Waterloo. Other officers named include Helen Wulf, Muscatine, senior vice president, and Norma Campbell, Manchester, fifth district national council member. A council meeting is set for Des Moines July 19 and 26, with a fall PowWow planned for Algona in October.

Stanley Foundation hosts international conference in Quebec

The Stanley Foundation of Muscatine sponsors the Fourth Conference on the United Nations of the Next Decade opening today in Quebec Canada. C Maxwell Stanley chairs the event with participants from 20 nations including Romulo Khan and US officials Ward Allen and Urban Whitaker. Conference director Jack M. Smith expects a closing statement by members on June 27.

City to spray for insects Friday on June 27

The second aerial spraying of Muscatine for insect control is scheduled for early Friday, June 27, weather permitting, announced by sanitation superintendent Frank Anson. The first spraying occurred June 16 using an airplane operated by Ames Applicator Service.

Driver Suffers Head Injury in City Car Crash

Sue Ellen Sontag of 834 Leroy street was treated at Muscatine General Hospital for a head cut after a rear end collision on Grandview avenue. Franklin Henry Burr of 600 Pine Street halted in traffic. Sontag’s MG suffered front end damage while Burr’s Chevrolet truck had rear end damage. Charges of failure to have vehicle under control filed in police court.

Cars damaged in accidents report weekend incidents

Police report multiple vehicle crashes over the weekend. Karen Hazen 844 Newell sustained fender damage in a Green and Lucas street collision with Charles Long 1023 Newell. two Muscatine youths ages 12 and 14 were seized amid theft inquiries involving Shirley Abney's car. Long backing across Green street struck left rear of the other car. Abney and Pontiac damage cited. E M Morgan 2020 Shady Lane and Cheryl Cozad 811 East Fifth collided on Orange and East Fourth with front end damage. Morgan charged with failure to observe a stop sign. William Hayes route 1 Muscatine and Ellis Law 1507 Hershey swiped on Park avenue. Patrick Schildberg 1610 Grand arrested on parole violation at 11:17 a m.

Ex-governor Blue praises Lutheran Homes at 75th jubilee festival

Former Town governor Robert D. Blue spoke at the Lutheran Homes annual festival on the theme Am I My Brother's Keeper. The event celebrated 75 years of Christian social services and highlighted aging needs as 18 million Americans are 65 plus. The cornerstone for the aging home Julius Doden Altenheim was incorporated in the new wings under construction. Diamond jubilee 1000 club honors were given with Mrs. Royal Meyer as the 100th member. The 1970 jubilee year will feature dedications of Valley View Manor and new wings at the June festival.

Chamber of Commerce to Host 25th Anniversary Reception

Muscatine Chamber of Commerce officers directors and staff invite all members and the public to a reception Thursday from 430 to 6 pm at Hotel Muscatine. The event marks the 25th anniversary of the chamber and aims to explain its role in community affairs since 1944 and gather member suggestions for improved programs.

Midwest Management buys American Sterling Life Insurance

Midwest Management Corporation of Muscatine Iowa has acquired American Sterling Life Insurance Company from Investors Insurance Corporation of Oregon. American Sterling, now a wholly owned subsidiary, moves its home office from Cedar Rapids to Des Moines with a Des Moines office opening next week.
