Muscatine council debates Cedar Parham rezoning hearing

The Muscatine city council spent much of a three hour meeting on rezoning requests in the Cedar Parham area. A key petitioner, E C Forrester, urged reverting Cedar St area from R-3A to R-2 citing enforcement concerns and future development. Public hearings set for July 17 on two more rezoning bids.

Park Place sewer plans largely unchanged by council vote

Muscatine council ended a two week review of the Park Place sewer project with a 5 to 1 vote approving the HUD funded enclosed sewer for Van Buren from First Ave to Mad Creek and a McClellan McArthur plan alternative. Evelyn Schauland opposed citing street housing counts. Karl Reichert and others supported after attorney Hintermeister cleared voting by a relater. City Engineer Barnum outlined a 1969 program with $22 000 assessed to property owners and $4 800 city share, while a $420 000 general obligation sewer bond was postponed for full council attendance. A fogging machine for insect control was to be used at the municipal golf course this evening.

Youth employment OK'd by Muscatine council vote

Muscatine city council approved a disadvantaged youth employment program for 14 to 18 year olds with a 5-1 vote though alderman Art Howe opposed. The city will fund up to 1000 dollars with 4000 from state and federal sources for a summer program run by city staff and supervised by city workers.

City scales rates upped in Muscatine on riverfront

Muscatine city council heard reports leading to higher public scale fees on the riverfront. Jaeger reported four firms using the scales agreed the charges would cover operating costs. suggested continuing service at no cost to taxpayers while scales remain usable. New rates: 75 cents per load up to 12,000 pounds, 1.00 for 12,000 to 20,000, 2.00 for over 20,000 to 30,000, and 3.00 for over 30,000 pounds. effective in July.

Miss Muscatine Competes In Miss Iowa Pageant

Man Not Guilty In Driving Wrong Way Case

A castrict court jury found R A Martineau not guilty of driving the wrong way in a one way alley. He had appealed a prior guilty verdict from Justice of the Peace Bay Pace, where a $10 fine was imposed.

Two cars damaged in Grandview and Bond crash

At 11 16 p m Thursday a police report says two cars collided at Grandview Avenue and Bond Street. Vern Edwin Vandyne 1821 New Hampshire rear and front end damage. Theft from Des Moines boat on Muscatine riverfront

Police report a break in on a Des Moines owned boat moored at the Muscatine riverfront. Missing items include a tape player with five tapes, two speakers, a 15 transistor short wave radio, a green toolbox with tools, and a .22 caliber pistol with two tone grip.

Stolen purse and jacket reported in two incidents

Two theft reports were received Thursday night by police. Dorothy Stromer of 225 Dilla Way said a black purse with eight items was taken from her home at 9:19 p.m. Jim Luedtke of 118 Roscoe Avenue reported a blue jacket stolen from his car at the Sun Mart lot on Park Avenue Wednesday night.

Lawn care clinics for teens scheduled downtown

Two lawn care clinics will be held Thursday June 26 under the Mayor's Citizens Advisory Sub Committee on Youth and Recreation and the Iowa State Employment Service. Sessions at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on the 3rd Street side of the county courthouse lawn. Art Miller will conduct the clinics teaching power lawn care equipment use, grass cutting, trimming, and general lawn care. Participants in the Let's Work program are urged to attend. additional summer work information available at the Town State Employment Service office.

Miss Iowa Contest Opens With Muscatine Queen Hopeful

Karen Pearlman of Muscatine competes in the Miss Iowa Pageant opening night performing in evening gown and swim suit and planning a modern dance talent. Kathryn Wendling, Miss Burlington, also performs piano pieces as she competes. Judith Bahl of Lee County wins preliminary talent with Ave Maria.
