Power outage delays Muscatine Journal and local services

A downtown electrical transformer failure cut power to Muscatine for hours on Wednesday. Journal presses and city edition production were stalled until 6 p.m. after supplies and routes faced delays. The outage also disrupted Model Laundry operations with three large motors burned out and 90 percent of ironing halted. YMCA activities, hot water boilers, and pool circulation were affected until power was restored.

Appeals trial underway for Martineau in one-way alley case

Trial of H A Martineau for traveling the wrong way in a one way alley proceeded in district court with Judge Robert Stohr presiding. Justice Ray Pace imposed a $10 fine on May 26 and notice of appeal and bond were filed. The incident reportedly occurred at the Stiles parking lot on April 15. Red Cross volunteers log hours after body retrieval near Muscatine

Red Cross workers spent over 100 hours at the scene for the body of William Henning 51 of Muscatine after his drowning in the Mississippi south of town. Volunteers served sandwiches soup coffee and soda to rescue crews. Cheryl Broud logged 4714 hours Lorraine Keel 39 Tom Duggan 35 Nellie Snavely 7. In hours from July 1 1968 to present Broud donated 24914 Reel 217. County rescue units and private boaters aided search. June 23 trial date set for Earl Clinton Smith on possession of stolen property. he pleaded not guilty via attorney William Wellens after waiving preliminary hearing June 10.

Pontiac Suffered Damage When Door Opened

A Pontiac owned by Linda Wetzel at 1295 Oregon street was struck on East Second Street 25 feet east of Sycamore at 8 20 p m Wednesday. The Rambler driven by Donald Hants of 1546 Grant caused the damage as the Pontiac door opened. Marie La Rue of 819 Miles suffered a minor injury.

Power outage spurs transformer replacement near Muscatine park

A 420-volt transformer is hoisted into place at the Muscatine Power and Water Company park lot along 3rd Street after a prolonged power failure Wednesday afternoon. The disturbance affected Model Laundry and The Muscatine Journal among other establishments.

Hebert leaves MCC faculty for Florida position

Richard Wu Herbert, director of student personnel at Muscatine Community College, has resigned as accepted by the Eastern Iowa Community College Board. He will lead student activities and counseling at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville Florida and pursue a doctorate at the University of Florida. He taught at Muscatine High School and joined the community college as an instructor before directing Student Personnel for the past two years.

Boy’s arrest halts purse thefts at Weed Park

A 12 year old boy was arrested after a purse was stolen from Mrs Don Calvert at Weed park. He admitted taking a purse there earlier this month and two in May. The boy was released to his mother and the case will be referred to juvenile court authorities.

Janet Roberts to enter Boston graduate school

Janet K. Roberts daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul I Roberts 907 Grand Avenue Muscatine has been accepted at Boston University's School of Public Communication to pursue a master of science degree in public relations. A University of Iowa journalism graduate she has been director of information services public relations at Cornell college Mt Vernon since 1967 Elaine Schroeder a 1969 Iowa journalism graduate has succeeded her at Cornell.

Theft of stereo tapes and purses reported in Muscatine

Police logged a theft from a Park Avenue Sun Mart parking lot with 27 stereo tapes valued at 150 dollars and a purse, checkbook, cash, driving license, papers, and keys missing from multiple victims including Elaine Toyne and Carol Vaupel. Mrs Price later found her purse and checkbook near the golf course, with only house and car keys missing. Michael Heath, 17, was picked up after an indictment for rape and held at Muscatine county jail with a 5000 dollar bond.

Migrant center readied for summer at Muscatine

Donna Becker of Cumberland Ruth Hall of Dows and 23 Iowa Methodist youths prepare Muscatine Migrant Center for the summer season painting and other projects under Rev Richard Hole Mt Union. They stay overnight at Musserville Methodist church during the annual Migrant Youth Camp.

Muscatine youths embark on six week foreign study trip

Dave Reusswig and Bob Dahl, both 17, join 183 students from the Foreign Study League on a six week program departing Muscatine for Moline and New Orleans then Rome. The group will visit Steinbach, Brussels, Paris, London and other sites to study comparative government and culture. Each student pays about 1000 dollars covering lodging, instruction, tours, and activities.

Mod 4 To Headline Teen Dance At Muscatine YWCA

The Mod 4, a popular young all girl group from Aledo Illinois, will play a teen dance Friday evening at the Muscatine YWCA. Sponsored and chaperoned by the Muscatine Jaycees, the event runs from 7 to 11 p.m. A master of ceremonies will preside and prizes including records and albums will be awarded.

City assessor's office to close for funeral Friday

Muscatine city assessor at city hall will close all day Friday for the funeral of William R. Henning a Muscatine bank officer and former county treasurer. Assessor Robert Birkhofer also reminds that homestead and military tax exemptions must be signed by July 1 with postcards sent to owners who have not signed.
