Council Hears Complaints on City Drainage Problems

Muscatine city council discussed storm sewers and drainage issues after recent flash floods. Alderman Gerald Powell led a session where about three motions were approved to address overflowing drains and related complaints from various property owners present at Thursday night’s meeting.

Rezoning Hearing Set for Muscatine Shopping Center Site

Muscatine City council sets June 20 at 7 15 p m for a hearing on General Management Corp request to rezone a 100 foot strip from B-1 residential to B-1 commercial. The land east of Park Avenue and north of Colorado Street would expand the site for a shopping center with seven businesses including a large department store and parking for 2385 cars. The plan, supported by the Plan and Zoning Commission, aims to improve parking by moving the building. four future sites remain for study.

Saturday Closing Slated For Offices at City Hall

Muscatine city hall will close Saturdays starting July 1 after city council approval. The change aligns with the county courthouse Saturday closings. The city clerk city engineer city treasurer and mayor offices will be closed Saturday while the justice of the peace and police courts remain open in the police station at city hall.

Miss Muscatine Pageant Opens Tonight at High School

The third Miss Muscatine pageant starts at 8 p.m. in the Muscatine High School auditorium with thirteen contestants performing swimsuit and evening gown segments. Five finalists will advance to talent numbers and judges will select Miss Muscatine 1987. City Power Use Hits New Peak Record

Muscatine's municipal power plant set a new electric demand high Thursday between 1 and 2 pm at 42,800 kilowatts, besting the July 18 1966 peak of 41,500 kilowatts as hot humid 90 degree weather boosted fan and AC use. With Wolverine's tannery starting soon and typical seasonal growth, peak load may reach about 46,600 kw this summer.
