Open House Successful at Port City Community Center

Port City Community Center reported a successful open house on Friday afternoon with strong attendance. Volunteers including Margaret Beecham and Marguerite contributed to the event's turnout and smooth operation.

Begin Repair Work On Mad Creek Levee

Repair work began Friday on two short sections along the west bank of the Mad Creek flood protection seawall in Muscatine. The 235 foot area, scour damaged by a flash flood, risks undermining concrete wall. The US Army Corps will buy 3000 tons of stone and perform the repairs at an approximate cost of 11000 dollars funded by Public Law 99. Flood emergency measures activated with seven district staff deployed to Des Moines Cedar and Skunk river basins to aid communities. one man assigned to Wapello area on lower Iowa river.

Long Receives U S Air Medal in Vietnam Service

Specialist Four David J. Long, son of Mr and Mrs James Long of Muscatine, received the Air Medal for meritorious achievement during sustained aerial flight in support of combat ground forces in Vietnam. From Nov 19, 1966, to Apr 22, 1967, he flew over hostile territory on more than 25 missions displaying discipline and devotion to duty, bringing credit to himself and his unit.

Missionary speaks Sunday at Our Savior

The Rev Herbert Hoefer will preach at 9 am Sunday at Our Savior Lutheran church. He recently graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary St Louis and will serve as a missionary to India with mission school in St Louis and study in Sitzerland before moving on to Ambur India. The community is invited to attend the 9 00 am service. The Lady Eagle Auxiliary hosted a prospective member party at the Eagle lodge with games prizes and a free membership awarded to Helen Bayers. Lorraine Diehl led the program with Doris Dunker assisting ­Lunch followed by servers Ellen Garrison Leela Garner and Doris Dunker.

Plan to Dedicate Local Mormon Chapel June 19

The Mormon chapel at 1202 Lucas Muscatine will be dedicated Monday evening June 19 with services at 8 00 p m. Elder Sterling W Sill will deliver the key sermon and dedicatory prayer. He is a prominent western states insurance executive and former University of Utah honorary degree recipient. The Cedar Rapids Stake meeting in Washington High School on Sunday June 18 features Elder Drury and Elder Boyden with public invited.

Local Man Jere Johnson Linked to USS Liberty Crew

Jere Johnson of Muscatine is identified as a former Liberty crew member. The 450 foot communications ship was damaged in an attack off the Sinai Peninsula with 33 dead and 75 wounded. Johnson served on the ship during late winter and spring before transfer to Cheltenham Maryland on April 20. The report notes the Liberty’s role in gathering and relaying intelligence in the Middle East. Another item reports theft of two Arvin Watkies Talkies valued at $90 each from Fry Electric Co. on Mulberry Avenue.

Rotary to Hear Women Voters League Speaker

Mrs Dennis Waterman first vice president and Iowa League of Women Voters director will address Muscatine Rotary at Hotel Muscatine Monday. She will outline League activities and discuss the Development of Human Resources, a national project of the league.

Susan Peters Honored at Shower Before Nuptials

Miss Susan Peters was honored at a pre-nuptial shower at the home of Mrs. Byron McKee. Hostesses were Mrs. Douglas Brodie, Mrs. Robert Phillips and Mrs. Byron McKee. About 25 guests attended a luncheon. She will wed William Griffin on June 29 in a double wedding with her sister Jeanne Peters and Douglas Bollinger.

Officers From This Area Receive Commissions at Town Graduation

Two local officers were commissioned at University of Town commencement exercises Friday morning. Marine 2nd Lt. Jerald Lamp and 1st Lt. Raymond Waters were commissioned by Col. Cyrus Shockey and Col. Brooks Booker, with Rear Admiral Alien Fisher and Capt. Bruce Tester officiating. University officials addressed the group after prayers. A total of 28 Army, 41 Air Force, 9 Navy and 2 Marines were commissioned.
