Mrs. R P Schutz, a southern cook near Muscatine, offers a dill okra recipe and a wild mushroom gravy created from spring motel mushrooms. The piece profiles the Schutz family, their church work, and Terri Schutz’s activities, with notes on other relatives and creating the dishes.
A hearty main dish salad using green cabbage, apples, Swiss cheese and corned beef. The dressing blends mayonnaise red wine vinegar horseradish mustard garlic caraway salt and pepper, then cabbage is dressed and topped with apple wedges cheese and corned beef for six servings.
A centered bake recipe yields a meat loaf style cheeseburger loaf with ground beef, cheddar cubes, eggs, tomato sauce, onion, green pepper, parsley, bread crumbs, salt, Worcestershire, baked at 350 degrees for about 1 hour 10 minutes. Serves eight.
Muscatine aldermen heard a plea from the Muscatine County Community Workshops for 15 000 from the city for workshop operations in 1974. The group has received 4 000 and 2 500 from the city in its first two years. President David Utley and executive director Denny Fossberg said they had met with county supervisors and United Way. They asked for 16 000 from county funds and 16 000 from United Way, noting more than 100 clients served annually, including over 40 city residents. The request was referred to city administrator Charles Coales.
A four member alderman committee and city administrator Charles Coates will meet with two firms Soil Testing Services of Iowa Inc. Cedar Rapids and Woodward McMaster and Associates Inc. St. Louis to study Muscatine mudslide areas Park Ave W Mississippi Dr Miller's Hill Greenwood Cemetery and Ash St. The panel may select a firm after a preliminary plan and cost estimate and possibly a second interview. A city report on spring mudslides will be sent to residents on a disaster area petition and officials are applying for flood disaster aid.
The Muscatine city council met Thursday night and referred or approved multiple plan and zoning items. O K Fisher Realty requested to buy a city parcel south of Clay Street between Mad Creek and Gobble Street, Lonnie Fultz sought rezoning of Grand Avenue blocks 1500 and 1600 to commercial for an apartment house, Metzger Quality Homes and Really requested a zoning change for Breese and Co subdivision lots, Tom Hoopes aimed to purchase a city parcel on West 3rd Street, and McKee Enterprises sought zoning for a Highway 98-61 motel center after new rules. Also approved was Muscatine Little League selling flags June 26-30, with various boards, permits and bonds routine.
Muscatine Toastmasters met at Kathy's with John McCormick presiding. Topic speakers explored space topics including space stations satellites and astronauts. Awards honored Tom Stratton as speaker and Dick Hulmacher as topic, with Dick Witter joke and Tom Mielnik voted into membership.
