Farm subsidy cap fuels Senate clash with Nixon plan
The Senate approved a farm bill with a $20,000 per farmer subsidy ceiling, opposing Nixon administration views and angering House Democrats Poage of Texas and Sisk of California. The measure, replacing a $55,000 cap, aims to curb costs while preserving incentives for growers amid a five year 1974 78 program. Kennedy and Proxmire amendments broaden food stamp access and restrict foreign currency use for military purposes.

Good Old Days Waller Works Reflect Muscatine Water History
Historical Muscatine water system details reveal early practices and steeply priced rates. The Muscatine Water Works built in 1675 drew river water with a 700 foot intake, 12 miles of mains, 117 hydrants, and a two million gallon reservoir. Rates from a 1899 booklet show charges for residences, saloons, baths, laundries, livery stables, and more, illustrating evolving public utilities and the lack of filtration in that era.
