Otto Smith Drowns in Wapsie Flood Near Wheatland
Otto Smith, 25, drowned in the Wapsie River about a mile above Wheatland while four companions in a skiff tried to herd cattle. The boat overturned and Smith disappeared, not recovered at press time. Companions, Joseph Boltz Morning Sun and George Kern Columbus Junction, attended to business in Wheatland. The rising flood covers North of Wapello to the hogback bridge, with fears of a 1881 level overflow. Memorial services were held Saturday despite rain. Rev. Reusch led prayers with Hortence Hunt delivering a declamation and Oscar Hale giving the main address. Ed Chassell sought to sell a book typewriter to the county.
