Tax assessment changes may be made annually
DES MOINES IDPA Significant revisions to Iowa tax assessment laws may shift to annual assessments to cut costs and provide timelier valuations. The Ways and Means subcommittee wants equalization adjustments in the year after an equalization order, and to place levies when the county auditor acts. Changes include giving local assessors more staff support, stricter April 15 notices, and earlier appeal windows to May 5. The panel also seeks a 27 percent valuation base with no tolerance during state-wide equalization and a state appraisal manual.

Nebraska raises individual income tax rate to 15 percent
The Nebraska Board of Equalization increased the 1972 individual income tax rate from 13 percent to 15 percent to offset higher federal taxes and ensure revenue targets. Tax Commissioner William Peters said 15 percent is the lowest rate to meet statutory retirements, with sales tax kept at 2.125 percent to balance collections. Corporate tax remains 20 percent of the individual rate.

Peru airliner missing possibly crashes in jungle lake
Reports say a Peruvian airliner with 92 aboard may have crashed in a rain forest lake after last contact near Pucallpa while en route from Lima to Iquitos. Six Americans were among the passengers as search planes extended a 60 mile arc along the Electra jet's route amid heavy rain and jungle terrain.
