Business activity remained robust through December with sales at or above 1929 levels and some firms beating last year's holiday results. Dealers cite delayed shopping, lower prices, and larger stock as factors, with sustained customer flow and repeat purchases across a shoe store, dry goods firm, hardware outlet, multiple department stores, men’s shops, a jewelry shop, and a furniture seller.
Sheriff Nesper and deputies seized a 30 gallon keg of alleged hooch in a raid on the Jesse Phillips property in South Muscatine near the packing plant. Phillips was not arrested at the time.
Otto C Zahnow aged 58 of Anamoose North Dakota died at the Hoxsey home on Burnside avenue at noon after an extended cancer illness. He was a patient here for some time. Survived by his widow three sons Alfred Walter and Earl two brothers and one sister. The body will be sent to Anamoose Sunday for funeral services and burial.
Chicago official H E Pierpont announces a 2 cent per mile passenger rate on four divisions in Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa starting Jan 1 to match motor bus competition. The change excludes main lines but may extend if successful. Other roads consider similar moves.
Prince Louis of Monaco suspended state and municipal councils and revoked 1911 constitutional guarantees. An army of over 100 mobilized was ready to quell riots as Monaco faces political upheaval amid a global economic crisis and pressure over a tourism driven recovery. Rumors say the prince may take a six month vacation or seek French aid, amid dissension and calls for stability.
Mrs. Ella Platt Banks 82 dies at her brother W D Platt's 1215 Iowa Avenue Rock Island home at 11 this morning. Born in Buffalo she moved to Rock Island as a child and later lived in Joliet where she married Joseph Banks who died seven years ago. Survived by three brothers H C Platt C T Platt W D Platt and two sisters Mrs Laura Case and Mrs Matilda Goldsmith all of Chicago. Funeral 2:30 Monday at Hoffman Funeral Home with Rev Ira Hawley. Burial Greenwood Cemetery.
Marie Crow of 601 East Sixth Street won the second weekly hidden word contest part of the Play Better Bridge event. Sponsored by 50 Muscatine merchants and the Muscatine Journal, the hidden message reads Happy Christmas Greetings Is Our Message To You. Crow earns $7.50. runner up F. Denison receives $3 and third placer Mrs. Harry A. Kelly gets $2.
Hollywood mourns Kin Hubbard a humor writer whose death ends a two line a day habit revered by peers. The voice praises his stage and print years noting his influence on comedy and the impact of his loss on colleagues in Indianapolis and beyond.
Senator Norris of Nebraska announced a campaign for constitutional amendment to abolish the electoral college. He said the goal is to allow an independent candidate to run for president without party organization and rejected leading a new third party.
Shirley McNeely a 35 year old farmer from Tennyson near Boonville surrenders to Warrick county sheriff after fatally hammering his mother stepfather and uncle late Friday. He claims no clear motive and that his mind began to clear afterward.
Harry M. Hoxsey filed a third district court suit against Norman Baker seeking judgment for 1000 dollars plus interest and costs. He says funds paid as his share of expenses for a joint suit against the American Medical Association were not repaid after Baker took over the case on October 5. Attorney J G Kammerer represents Hoxsey. Also noted: related suits include institute accounts alleging about 85000 due and a 250000 slander case. An AP report says a 50000 damage suit against KWCR owner Baker was dismissed.
County funds on deposit totaling 2061.92 at Stockton Safe County bank were closed by officials. Under the Brookhart Lovrein act, interest accumulations go to the state sinking fund which repays losses if banks cannot pay creditors. Stockton officials expect full liquidation of claims in 30 to 60 days.

William H. Billy the Scout Taylor, a 103 year old veteran of the Indian Wars, Civil War service in the 78th Virginia, and a long career as a motion picture scout, died of old age in Hollywood. He recalled meeting General Custer and a Civil War dispatch ride, and he spent two decades fighting Indians before retiring to California.
At Annapolis United States Naval Academy Bancroft hall life returned to normal after a midshipman who converted quarters into a conning tower with wires clocks lights telephones and elevators resigned. Hidden wiring and a master clock were discovered revealing a long running prank scheme.
